The Buccaneers’ defense put on a clinic in Week 8, and the league noticed.
After Tampa Bay’s 16-0 shutout of the Atlanta Falcons, linebacker Alex Anzalone and cornerback Jacob Parrish landed on Pro Football Focus’ NFL Team of the Week. Both turned in standout performances in a game where the Buccaneers repeatedly slammed the door on Michael Penix Jr. and the Falcons offense.
Anzalone delivered what might have been his best outing since arriving in Tampa Bay. He picked off Penix twice, finishing with seven tackles, four defensive stops and two interceptions over 53 defensive snaps while not missing a tackle.
He was especially sharp in coverage, allowing just one five-yard catch on four targets. PFF gave him a 94.3 coverage grade and a 93.3 overall defensive grade, which was tied for the highest among qualifying players in Week 8.
The two picks were also a personal first. Anzalone had never had multiple interceptions in a game across his previous nine NFL seasons. Now he has three interceptions as a Buccaneer, and he’s giving Todd Bowles another defender who can flip a game from the second level.
Parrish made his own case with another active day in the secondary. He recorded an interception, seven tackles and two passes defended against Atlanta, helping finish off a four-turnover afternoon for Tampa Bay. The rookie continued a strong run in coverage as well, entering the game as the NFL leader in passes defended with 11 and adding two more to that total.
What stood out most for Tampa Bay was the balance of it all. Anzalone was making plays from linebacker, Parrish was doing damage on the back end, and the defense as a whole forced four turnovers in consecutive games. Holding Atlanta scoreless and piling up four interceptions was a full-team effort, but Anzalone and Parrish were the headliners.

Alex Anzalone Is Becoming A Much Bigger Deal For This Bucs Defense
Alex Anzalones rise has become one of the more notable developments for Tampa Bays defense, and Week 8 only sharpened that picture. The inside linebacker was recognized as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after a standout outing that included two interceptions, six combined tackles, a tackle for loss and two passes defensed, a performance that fit right into a Buccaneers defense that led the league in takeaways and interceptions during the week.
Anzalones three interceptions on the season have him tied for second in the NFL, a strong marker for a player who has steadily become more central to what Tampa Bay is doing on that side of the ball. The honor also carries some added weight for the Buccaneers, since it is the first weekly award of his career and the first time a Tampa Bay player has earned the distinction this season. Doug Williams Just Put A Buccaneers Legacy Debate Back In Focus
Doug Williams latest Hall of Fame nod has a way of pulling the Buccaneers back into one of the franchises most enduring legacy conversations. The first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl has been nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fames 2027 class, putting his name alongside other notable contributors such as Robert Kraft, Virginia McCaskey, Ralph Hay and John Wooten. For Tampa Bay fans, it is another reminder of how much of the leagues history still runs through Williams trailblazing career.
The nomination also arrives at a time when the Buccaneers are juggling more immediate football matters, with linebacker Alex Anzalone earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors and receiver Emeka Egbuka plus outside linebacker Yaya Diaby working back from injuries. Still, Williams case has a different kind of weight because it speaks to the broader story of the game, not just the week-to-week grind. The next step in that Hall of Fame process will determine how far this latest push goes, and for now it keeps a familiar Buccaneers figure in the center of a debate that has never really gone away. Buccaneers Suddenly Face A Trade Deadline Decision That Could Shift Fast
The Buccaneers have put themselves back into the kind of position teams hope for in late October, with their improved playoff outlook making them a legitimate candidate to buy at the NFL trade deadline. In a season where the margin between chasing the division and simply staying afloat can change quickly, Tampa Bay is now being discussed as a club that could look to add help rather than stand pat.
The list of possible fits is broad enough to show how many different ways the Bucs could try to strengthen the roster, from tight end help to pass rush and interior depth. Trey McBride, Khalil Mack, Dallas Goedert and Roy Lopez have all surfaced as names to watch, but the bigger question is whether Tampa Bays next stretch of games leaves the front office leaning into a move or forcing a more cautious approach in the division race.
