The Browns added a new wrinkle to their quarterback conversation on Thursday, and it came with a familiar name for Shedeur Sanders.
Cleveland is signing wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. to its practice squad, according to multiple Thursday morning reports shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk and others. Horn was cut loose by the Carolina Panthers after he muffed a second-quarter punt in Carolina’s 59-37 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sept.
- He had entered that game as the Panthers’ top kickoff and punt return option.
There’s no word yet on whether Horn will be available for the Browns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, but the move does line up with Cleveland’s schedule in a notable way. The Browns’ home opener on Sept. 27 is against the Panthers.
The other detail that makes this signing stand out: Horn and Sanders were teammates at Colorado during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Cade Cracas of Sports Illustrated reported that Horn piled up 1,008 receiving yards and seven touchdowns over those two years.
All of that lands in the middle of a very loud Browns quarterback situation. A Thursday move won’t quiet the growing belief around the league that first-year head coach Todd Monken could turn to Sanders either during or after the Week 2 game in Tampa. A Wednesday report went even further, saying executives “around the league...believe that by the time the Browns play their home opener in Week 3, Watson will be benched.”
Monken didn’t lock himself into Deshaun Watson as the starter when he spoke with reporters on Wednesday, either. That only added fuel to the speculation.
Watson has already heard the frustration from Browns fans, who booed him during a home preseason game before he threw for just 100 yards with an interception through the first three quarters of Cleveland’s 34-10 Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 13.
Whether fair or not, the pressure is obvious. If Watson struggles again against the Buccaneers, the noise around a possible change will only get louder. And now Cleveland has added a receiver who already knows Sanders well.
