The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ sixth day of training camp brought a little bit of everything on Tuesday night: the first and only night practice, another session inside the indoor training facility, and a second straight day in pads that finally started to crank up the contact.
That extra edge showed up in a big way.
There were three fights during the second-to-last team period, and two of them were full-blown scraps between the offense and defense. One of the altercations started with LB Josiah Trotter getting testy with some offensive players, but the other two escalated fast enough that an offensive player was flung by a defensive player during the second one. Todd Bowles stepped in and called a team meeting in the middle of practice to settle things down before the group finished the period.
The intensity fit the vibe the Bucs were after. They wanted bigger, more aggressive personalities in the building this year, and Tuesday’s practice made it pretty clear they’ve got them. The coaching staff won’t be looking for constant shoving matches, but the attitude that showed up on the field is probably part of what they had in mind.
Injuries and rest days also thinned out the roster, especially at wide receiver. Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan were all held out, while Tez Johnson was dealing with a groin strain that the team is evaluating.
David Sills also left during a special teams drill and came back with a wrapped knee. By halfway through practice, nearly the entire receiver room was out of action.
That opened the door for the lower end of the depth chart to get plenty of work.
Dean Patterson made the most of it, hauling in two touchdowns in the red zone period, both in the back left corner of the end zone. The second one came on the same rep that sparked the team’s second fight. Ted Hurst also came down with a strong catch in that same area with Zyon McCollum tight in coverage - a play that might have gone down as a Calijah Kancey sack in a real game.
Kameron Johnson got a heavy workload as well, and Tampa Bay spent plenty of time spreading the ball around to the backup receivers. The injuries weren’t ideal, but the day gave the Bucs a chance to see some depth shine in a room that suddenly had to carry a much bigger load.
As for the players who were out, Tristan Wirfs and Vita Vea were again non-participants. Both had been injured during a conditioning test, according to Todd Bowles. Vea’s absence is more likely connected to his contract holdout, and it doesn’t appear he’ll be on the field until that situation gets resolved.
Cornerback Benjamin Morrison also sat out individual drills on Tuesday after taking part for the first time on Monday. He still isn’t in team periods, though Bowles said he could be back in those as soon as this week.

Damarion Williams Is Forcing His Way Into Tampa Bays Secondary Battle
Damarion Williams has spent training camp turning a quiet roster bubble into a real conversation in the Buccaneers secondary. The cornerback came into the offseason with an uphill climb after bouncing from the Ravens to the Seahawks before landing on Tampa Bays practice squad last year and later signing a futures contract, but he has made enough of an impression to keep his name in the mix as camp moves along.
For a player once easy to slot in as a practice-squad type, the shift has been noticeable because Williams is showing more than just depth value. Todd Bowles has come away with a positive view of his work, and in a secondary room where every rep matters, that kind of camp momentum can change how a player is viewed from one week to the next. Bucs WR Battle Just Got More Complicated At The Worst Time
The Buccaneers wide receiver competition took another turn during training camp, and not in a way the staff wanted. Tampa Bay worked indoors because of rain for a third straight practice, but the bigger issue was the receiver room itself, where the injury list has kept growing just as roles are being sorted out.
Tez Johnson was among the latest to leave early, with Todd Bowles confirming the issue as a groin tweak, while David Sills V also exited and appeared to be favoring his knee. With Jalen McMillan and Emeka Egbuka already having missed or been limited at times, the Bucs are trying to keep a crowded battle on track while enough of the group is on the field to make the evaluation meaningful.
