The Buccaneers are staring at a steep climb after Week 6, and the margin for error has all but vanished.
Tampa Bay slipped to 1-5 on Sunday with a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, a record that puts them in an almost impossible neighborhood by NFL standards. Only four teams in league history have ever reached the playoffs after starting 1-5, and the Bucs already dug themselves into another deep hole by opening the season 0-4. Only one team in NFL history has ever made the postseason after that kind of start, so every setback now carries extra weight.
Still, the NFC South is weak enough to keep the door cracked. Tampa Bay is just two and a half games behind Carolina, which means the season is not over yet if the Bucs can put together a run. Even with the loss to Pittsburgh, the Bucs remain in the mix simply because nobody in the division has separated from the pack.
Right now, Tampa Bay sits at the bottom of the NFC. Washington also has only one win, but the Commanders’ tie keeps them ahead of the Buccaneers in the conference standings. And in a bizarre wrinkle, Tampa Bay is one of three NFC South teams that still has not won at home.
Carolina continues to lead the way after beating the Philadelphia Eagles. The Panthers are the only team in the division with a winning record, and they’ve played one fewer game than the rest of the NFC South because their bye week is already behind them. They’re also the only team in the division with a positive point differential and the only one that has won at home this season.
Atlanta had been in a much better spot not long ago. The Falcons were 2-2 and riding a two-game winning streak, but that has flipped into a two-game skid after a loss to the Chicago Bears. They still hold second place in the division because they already own an NFC South win over New Orleans.
The Saints are right behind Atlanta and, in the standings, ahead of Tampa Bay. New Orleans got back in the win column Sunday by beating the New York Giants, which lifted them after they had fallen below the Buccaneers last week. The Falcons and Saints now share the same record, but New Orleans stays behind Atlanta because of that divisional loss.
Next Sunday brings Tampa Bay its first NFC South game of the year, with the Buccaneers facing the Panthers. Atlanta gets the red-hot San Francisco 49ers, while New Orleans travels to Paris to play the Steelers.

Leonard Fournette Just Turned Up The Heat On Todd Bowles
Leonard Fournettes latest comments added another layer to a season already straining the patience of everyone around the Buccaneers. Speaking on a recent podcast, the former Tampa Bay running back weighed in on Todd Bowles and described a coach whose style, in his view, is more reserved and defense-minded than offense-first, a sharp contrast at a time when the team is trying to steady itself after a 1-5 start.
The bigger jolt came from Fournettes read on where things could be headed next. Even with Tampa Bay still believing there is a path to hang around in the division race, he floated the possibility that Bowles time with the team could be nearing its end, a pointed remark from someone who knows the room and understands how quickly the mood can turn when wins stop coming. Buccaneers Suddenly Face A Vita Vea Debate Fans Wont Ignore
With the Buccaneers off to a 1-5 start and Baker Mayfield missing significant time, the conversation around the roster has shifted fast from chasing the NFC South to figuring out what comes next. Even with the season still in its early stretch, the losses have pushed Tampa Bay into a spot where every veteran on the defense starts to look a little more interesting to outside teams, especially one as proven as Vita Vea.
Vea has long been one of the leagues most difficult interior linemen to deal with, which is why contenders looking for help up front would surely check in if the Bucs made him available. He is under contract through 2027, so any decision on him would not be about a short-term fix, but about whether Tampa Bay is willing to listen as the bigger questions around the direction of the season keep growing. Colts Suddenly Have A Veteran Trade Decision Rams Fans Will Watch
Davante Adams ruptured hamstring has forced the Rams into the market earlier than they probably expected, and the ripple effects are already reaching beyond Los Angeles. With Terry McLaurin unavailable because of a season-ending injury, the Rams are sorting through receiver options and have been linked to familiar names such as Keenan Allen and Quentin Johnston while weighing whether they need to swing for a more established fit.
One of the more intriguing possibilities is Chris Godwin, a player the Rams would clearly have interest in if Tampa Bay were willing to listen. For the Buccaneers, though, the decision is not as simple as shopping a proven veteran, especially with a 1-5 record and the possibility that the NFC South is still there to be chased. That is what makes this situation worth watching, because the Rams need help now, and Tampa Bay has to decide whether convenience, urgency and season outlook all line up. [Read more 🡒]
