The Buccaneers’ early-season spiral could have sent Tampa Bay in a much different direction than the one it’s on now.
After dropping from 6-2 to 8-9 and missing the playoffs last year, the franchise moved on from offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard and brought in Zac Robinson, who had previously worked with Baker Mayfield during their time together with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. But Robinson’s first stretch in Tampa Bay got rocky fast. The 2026 Buccaneers slid to 1-5 after Mayfield suffered a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand in a Week 3 loss that left the team at 0-3.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler in a piece updated Wednesday morning, Robinson was under real pressure during that skid.
“My sense is that Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Zac Robinson was on thin ice after the team’s 1-5 start,” Fowler wrote. “The offense was off-balance, and an uptick was necessary.
Coach Todd Bowles and Robinson huddled up to crystallize the offense’s identity. Robinson, to his credit, leaned into the running game, the team’s strength behind a stout offensive line.”
That adjustment showed up quickly once Mayfield returned to the lineup. In a 43-13 win at the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 25, he completed seven of 11 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, while Tampa Bay piled up 258 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. The next week, the Buccaneers followed with a 16-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons, rushing for 324 yards in windy, rainy conditions as Mayfield didn’t attempt a pass.
Fowler also said the losing could have triggered an even bigger shakeup. “Had Tampa lost to Carolina to fall to 1-6,” Fowler continued, “selling at the trade deadline would have been on the table. Now, the Bucs suddenly look like the division’s best team once again -- with a playcaller who made key adjustments.”
One name Fowler specifically mentioned in that scenario was defensive tackle Vita Vea, whom the Buccaneers could have considered moving before the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline. But Fowler added that the “Bucs are not expected to move” Vea now.
Tampa Bay heads into its bye after facing the 6-2 Chicago Bears on Sunday night. DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Buccaneers as six-point road underdogs as of Wednesday morning.

Falcons Face A Brutal Week 9 Test After Their Latest Offensive Letdown
Week 9 is shaping up as one of the most interesting stretches of the 2026 season, with the trade deadline looming on Nov. 10 and several teams trying to sort out where they stand before the market closes. For Tampa Bay, the spotlight lands on a matchup with the Bears, a game that carries more weight than a typical midseason meeting because both clubs are trying to keep pace in their divisions while navigating the ripple effects of roster moves and injuries around the league.
The Bears arrive with momentum after a recent trade that bolstered the middle of their defense, and that only adds to the challenge for a Buccaneers team looking to make a statement in the NFC race. It is the kind of game that can say a lot about where Tampa Bay really stands, especially with the deadline approaching and every result starting to feel like part of a larger October and November push. Bucs Suddenly Have A Reliable Edge At The Perfect Time
Chase McLaughlin has quietly become one of the most dependable pieces on Tampa Bays roster, and the timing could hardly be better. The kicker was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month after a spotless October, when he converted all 18 of his kicks and drilled seven field goals, a stretch that pushed him to the top of the NFL scoring race and extended his run of made field goals to 19 straight.
For a Buccaneers team trying to keep its footing as the season moves deeper into November, having that kind of stability on special teams matters. There was also some encouraging movement elsewhere on the practice field, with receiver Emeka Egbuka back after a foot injury and defensive lineman Elijah Roberts returning from illness, giving Tampa Bay a little more depth as it waits to see how the rest of the week unfolds. Buccaneers Suddenly Face A Tristan Wirfs Concern Before Bears Game
A late-week injury report has put a familiar name in a less comfortable spot for Tampa Bay heading into its Week 9 matchup with the Bears. Left tackle Tristan Wirfs was added after missing practice because of a toe injury, leaving his status for Sunday uncertain at a position the Buccaneers can least afford to shuffle.
If Wirfs is unable to go, the next man up would likely be Ben Chukwuma at left tackle, a significant development for an offensive line that has to help keep the game plan on schedule. Todd Bowles is expected to update Wirfs status in the coming media sessions, and for now the Buccaneers are left waiting on one of their most important players. [Read more 🡒]
