The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have patched one hole this offseason, but their backup quarterback situation still looks like a spot that can crack at the worst possible time.
That has been a running issue for Tampa Bay over the last few years. Teddy Bridgewater held the job last season and, in limited action, looked far removed from his best form.
Before that, Kyle Trask spent two seasons as the No. 2 quarterback despite never starting an NFL game. The Bucs got away with it because Baker Mayfield never missed a start in his first three seasons with the team, but the margin for error has been thin the whole time.
Now the club has turned to Jake Browning in an effort to strengthen the position, though CBS Sports isn’t buying the upgrade just yet.
Analysts Emory Hunt and John Breech recently ranked every quarterback room in the NFL by conference, and Tampa Bay landed at No. 15 in the NFC, second-worst in the conference. Browning was a big reason why.
“[Browning] played so poorly that the Bengals said, ‘Alright, well, we’re done with you and we’re going to trade for Joe Flacco. So that’s the Buccaneers’ backup quarterback situation right now,” Breech said.
Browning went 0-3 last season while filling in for Joe Burrow, throwing six touchdowns and eight interceptions. After those three losses, Cincinnati brought in 40-year-old Joe Flacco in an attempt to rescue its season.
“The Bucs really have an issue with their reserve quarterback situation,” Hunt said. “I like [Browning’s] moxie but he turns the ball over at a high clip.”
Still, Browning may not have the backup job locked down. Connor Bazelak, an undrafted free agent signed last offseason, spent his rookie year on the practice squad and could push for the No. 2 role if his development continues.
Tampa Bay also added Jalon Daniels as an undrafted free agent this offseason. The team appears especially high on Daniels, with several coaches and general manager Jason Licht praising him. Daniels is still a raw developmental prospect, but the Buccaneers plan to give him every chance to prove himself.
