The Buccaneers are still searching for their first win, and Jalon Daniels’ first NFL start didn’t change that. Tampa Bay fell 17-14 to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, leaving the Bucs at 0-4 as they head into a short week against the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott.
Baker Mayfield did not start in Week 4 after getting hurt late in the loss to the Minnesota Vikings, so Daniels got the nod in his Buccaneers debut. The rookie finished with two interceptions, one touchdown, and fewer than 150 passing yards, a line that on the surface looks like a step backward.
But the bigger picture was messier than that. Even with Daniels under center, Tampa Bay’s offense didn’t really get any worse than it had been in the previous three games. In spots, it actually looked a little smoother.
Daniels showed better chemistry with Chris Godwin Jr., handled pressure better, and used his legs in a way that gave the Bucs something extra. He ran for a franchise-record 55 yards on eight carries and was Tampa Bay’s most effective threat on the ground, even with Bucky Irving finishing with 61 yards on 16 carries.
That doesn’t mean Daniels looked like a franchise quarterback. He didn’t.
But he also didn’t separate himself from Mayfield in the wrong direction. If anything, the debut made Mayfield’s own struggles harder to ignore, because the offense looked just as stuck with the rookie as it had with the veteran.
That’s where the larger problem sits for Tampa Bay. The issues go beyond who’s taking the snaps.
Todd Bowles and Zac Robinson are the names the performance keeps pointing back to, and the Bucs keep losing because the operation around the quarterback isn’t working. Baker Mayfield may be disappointing, but he isn’t the only issue, and at this point it doesn’t seem to matter much who lines up under center.

Cowboys Have A Thursday Night Edge Fans Will Want To Track
A Thursday night trip to Dallas already comes with enough attention, but the Buccaneers are also walking into it with Baker Mayfield sidelined and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels set to make the start. Tampa Bay will be trying to steady itself against a Cowboys team that is coming off a win and has the kind of established passing game that can make a primetime game look very different by halftime.
Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb loom as the obvious problems for Tampa Bay to solve, especially with the Cowboys carrying the edge in the betting market. For fans tracking the matchup beyond the final score, the more interesting wrinkle is how the prop market and the defensive rankings line up with a Buccaneers offense forced into a different shape than the one it expected entering Week 5. Bruce Arians Sounds Off As Bucs Season Reaches A Breaking Point
The Buccaneers have stumbled into October at 0-4, a start that leaves almost no margin for error and puts their playoff hopes under immediate pressure. Bruce Arians, now serving as a Senior Football Consultant, still believes there is a path forward, and he pointed to the coming month as a critical stretch for a team dealing with major injuries, a tough slate and very little early momentum.
What has kept Tampa Bay from being buried entirely is the defense, which has stayed strong by advanced metrics even as the offense has struggled to find consistency. A big part of that offensive issue has been the play up front, where the line has not delivered at the level the Buccaneers need, and until that changes, the season is likely to keep hovering at a breaking point. Todd Bowles Enters A Brutal Cowboys Test With Everything At Stake
The Buccaneers head into their matchup with the Cowboys carrying the weight of an 0-4 start and the noise that comes with it. Todd Bowles has already found himself under growing fire, and this trip into a game against a Dallas team with a dangerous offense only sharpens the stakes for a Tampa Bay staff and roster trying to steady itself before the season slips further away.
The timing could hardly be less forgiving. Tampa Bay has struggled in primetime under Bowles, and the challenge is made tougher by the absence of safety Antoine Winfield Jr. because of injury. A loss would not just deepen the hole in the standings, it would likely turn up the volume around Bowles even more as the Buccaneers try to avoid letting one bad start define their year.
