Buccaneers Secondary Looks Different Thanks To One Rookie Surprise

Keionte Scott's impressive rookie season has cemented his status as another draft triumph for Buccaneers GM Jason Licht, emphasizing the team's renewed defensive strength.

The Buccaneers may have found another one in Keionte Scott.

When Tampa Bay grabbed the defensive back in the fourth round back in April, the pick drew plenty of attention. Scott was viewed as one of the draft’s biggest steals, a consensus top-100 talent who slipped far enough for the Buccaneers to scoop him up. With the secondary carrying real questions, the hope was simple: Scott could walk in and give them steady play at nickel right away.

That’s exactly how it has played out.

Scott has not only settled into the role, he’s started to stand out around the league. Sports Illustrated’s Justin Melo recently put him among the top three fourth-round picks from the 2026 NFL Draft, a nod to how quickly the rookie has turned draft buzz into real production.

“Keionte Scott was among our biggest predraft steals and he's played like it for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.”

The numbers back up the praise. Scott has 39 tackles on the season, along with a sack and five pressures as an edge blitzer.

More than the stat line, though, he’s become a dependable piece for a defense that needed one. He has earned Todd Bowles’ trust, too, with Bowles calling him one of his favorite players on the roster.

His rise has been steady from the start. Scott put together a strong offseason, won a starting job, and carried that momentum into the regular season without missing a beat. He has played 63% of Tampa Bay’s defensive snaps this year, which says plenty about how quickly he has become part of the plan.

And he’s not doing it in isolation. Nine weeks into the season, the Buccaneers’ rookie class is still looking like a win for Jason Licht and the front office.

Scott’s presence at nickel has helped stabilize a secondary in transition, while also giving Parrish the chance to move outside. That adjustment has been part of a broader defensive surge, with Tampa Bay sitting as a top three defense in the NFL this season.

With Zyon McCollum, Jacob Parrish, and Keionte Scott all playing well, the Buccaneers appear to have something real in the secondary. For a team that needed answers there, Scott is starting to look like one of the best ones they could have hoped for.

Week 9 arrives with the trade deadline looming on Nov. 10, and the Buccaneers are part of a slate that could start to reshape the NFC picture. Tampa Bay gets the Bears next, a matchup that carries extra weight because Chicago has been active in the market and is trying to keep its momentum rolling after a recent run of strong play.

For the Buccaneers, it is another chance to measure themselves against a team that has quickly become a tougher out, with both clubs sitting near the top of their divisions. Tampa Bay has its own business to handle, but this one comes with the added backdrop of roster moves around the league and the kind of midseason pressure that can make a simple November game feel a lot bigger. Buccaneers Suddenly Face A Tristan Wirfs Concern Before Bears Game

A late-week injury report brought an unwelcome wrinkle for Tampa Bay ahead of its Week 9 matchup with the Bears, as left tackle Tristan Wirfs was added after missing practice because of a toe injury. For a Buccaneers offense that leans heavily on stability up front, any question about Wirfs is a notable one, especially with game day approaching and the rest of the line suddenly waiting on one of its most important pieces.

His status for Sunday is still uncertain, and the next update is likely to come from Todd Bowles when he meets with reporters in the coming days. If Wirfs is unable to go, Tampa Bay would have to turn elsewhere at left tackle, a spot that carries obvious weight against Chicago and could force the Buccaneers into a different look on the edge. Bucs Turnaround Just Raised The Stakes For One Big Deadline Decision

A rough start has given way to back-to-back wins, and the Buccaneers suddenly look like a team with real momentum again. The turnaround has even drawn praise from Mike Tomlin, who pointed to Tampa Bays defense and running game as the kind of formula that can carry a team when the season starts to tighten up.

Now the bigger question is whether that surge changes how aggressively the Bucs approach the upcoming NFL trade deadline. With the club close to the top of the NFC South, Tampa Bay has to decide if it wants to stand pat and trust the current mix or make a move to help keep this playoff push rolling. [Read more 🡒]
