Buccaneers Passing Game Just Put Emeka Egbuka At A Crossroads

With rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels at the helm, Emeka Egbuka has the potential to revitalize his NFL career and become a key playmaker for the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers have spent the early part of the 2026 season watching Emeka Egbuka get dragged into Baker Mayfield’s mess.

Egbuka entered the year with plenty of buzz after a strong rookie campaign that produced 63 receptions, 938 yards and 6 touchdowns. Even with those numbers, though, the feeling around him was that there was more there - a lot more.

The talent was obvious. The production just never quite matched it.

That gap has only widened through three games this season. Mayfield has been the biggest reason Tampa Bay is 0-3, with turnovers, missed reads, missed throws and a steady stream of sacks that have made the offense look stuck in mud.

Egbuka has taken the hit from that decline more than anyone. Through three weeks, he has 13 catches for 141 yards, and his 7.1 yards per target tells the story of a receiver being used more as an escape valve than as a weapon.

There is at least a new wrinkle now. Mayfield is out after dislocating his thumb against the Minnesota Vikings, and rookie undrafted free agent Jalon Daniels is set to step in.

Daniels came into the league with plenty of intrigue after standing out in the preseason, and the Buccaneers were clearly paying attention. They had multiple interviews with him in the pre-draft process, and the people who follow these things closely seem to believe there’s something real there.

The early glimpse has backed that up. Daniels has shown a live arm, better decision-making than most rookie quarterbacks and a willingness to push the ball downfield with accuracy. He moves better, absorbs fewer sacks and gives Tampa Bay something the offense has been missing: a quarterback willing to actually challenge defenses.

That matters for Egbuka. He has been getting open.

A lot. But Mayfield has either passed him over or failed to connect when the throws have gone farther than 20 yards, especially outside the numbers.

It’s a pattern that looked familiar before this season, too.

Daniels doesn’t have to be Baker Mayfield’s replacement in every sense to make a difference. He just has to be better than the version of Mayfield the Buccaneers have gotten over the first three weeks. And if he is, Egbuka could finally start getting used like the kind of receiver Tampa Bay has been waiting on.

Buccaneers Ask Unproven Rookie To Survive Their Biggest Offensive Problem

The Buccaneers are asking a lot of a rookie at a difficult time, turning to Jalon Daniels against a Packers defense that will make life miserable if Tampa Bays protection issues show up again. The context is not subtle: the Buccaneers have spent the season at the top of the NFL in sacks allowed, and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has already acknowledged how hard it has been to keep the quarterback upright, especially after Baker Mayfields injury changed the look of the offense.

Daniels now gets the kind of first start that can either accelerate a players growth or expose every flaw around him, and the Buccaneers are banking on the former. The team has expressed confidence in his poise and ability to handle pressure, but the matchup still leaves Tampa Bay balancing belief in a rookie with the reality of an offensive line that has not given its quarterbacks much margin for error. Buccaneers Suddenly Have A Quarterback Depth Issue To Solve

The Buccaneers added a familiar face behind Baker Mayfield this week, signing veteran quarterback Brett Rypien to the practice squad after Mayfield was injured. It is the kind of move that makes sense in a hurry, especially for a team trying to keep the quarterback room steady while the starter works his way back.

Rypiens tie to offensive coordinator Zac Robinson should help, since the two were together with the Rams in 2023 and already know the framework. For now, Tampa Bays healthy quarterback options also include Easton Stick and rookie Jalon Daniels, leaving the Bucs with a depth chart that suddenly has to hold together until Mayfield is ready again. Buccaneers Have 3 Matchups That Could Decide Their First Win

The Buccaneers head into their meeting with the Packers in a spot both familiar and frustrating: trying to shake off an 0-1 start and find an early-season foothold. For Tampa Bay, the game may come down to whether its defense can turn a few key one-on-one battles into enough disruption to tilt the afternoon its way, starting up front against a Green Bay offensive line that has already shown some shaky moments.

The bigger concern is keeping Green Bays playmakers from turning those protection issues into chunk gains. Tampa Bays cornerbacks will be tested by Christian Watson, while the linebackers and safeties have to stay disciplined against tight end Tucker Kraft, who can stress the middle of the field. If the Buccaneers can win those matchups, they give themselves a better path to their first victory, even if the margin for error is still thin. [Read more 🡒]
