The Buccaneers left Cleveland with the same problem that keeps showing up in ugly losses: the run game was good enough to matter, but the offense couldn’t cash in when it mattered most.
Tampa Bay fell 23-19 to the Browns in a game slowed by weather delays and rough field conditions, and the result dropped the Buccaneers to 0-2. There were bright spots, especially on the ground, but too many drives stalled out before they could turn into points.
Bucky Irving was the biggest positive for Tampa Bay’s offense. He ran for 89 yards on 17 carries and averaged 5.2 yards per attempt, giving the Buccaneers a runner who could work inside, bounce outside and create yards after contact.
He didn’t find the end zone, but he helped move the chains and set up scoring chances. Irving has also done a good job this season while returning from injury.
Baker Mayfield added 29 rushing yards on four carries, and Tampa Bay finished with 137 rushing yards as a team. That kind of production matters because it opens up play-action and gives the offense a little more balance. Against a Browns defense like this one, that total stands out.
The issue was everything around the run game. Tampa Bay’s offensive line had a rough day in pass protection, and Mayfield was sacked three times while dealing with steady pressure.
He was forced to move around in the pocket, and at times the pocket simply collapsed. Even with Tristan Wirfs anchoring the unit as an All-Pro tackle, the line didn’t hold up the way it needed to.
Penalties made the problems worse. The offensive line was flagged three times, and multiple holding calls repeatedly put the offense behind schedule. Several drives that had a chance to turn into points instead ended in punts.
The red zone was another sore spot. Tampa Bay reached the red zone four times and came away with only one touchdown. That kind of inefficiency was a major reason the Buccaneers couldn’t take control of the game.
Mayfield’s stat line was solid enough on paper - 21 of 34 for 182 yards and a touchdown - but he also threw an interception on an out route when a defensive back got underneath the ball in what looked like a cover-two-style drop. He did connect on a 49-yard throw to Tez Johnson, but the offense couldn’t finish. On fourth down later, an incompletion to Emeka Egbuka ended the game.
The Buccaneers head next to Minnesota to face the Vikings on September 27th.
