The Tampa Bay Buccaneers might be looking at a big target for Baker Mayfield in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski has Tampa Bay taking LSU tight end Trey’Dez Green with the 19th overall pick in his latest 2027 NFL Mock Draft, and the fit is pretty easy to see if Mayfield stays put. Mayfield’s contract situation is still unsettled, but there’s optimism that he will re-sign. Sobleski made clear that the next six months will matter.
“Baker Mayfield's contract situation must be settled over the next six months,” writes Sobleski. “As of now, he should be expected to re-sign, even though it's not a given.
With Mayfield at quarterback, the Buccaneers continue to build around him by adding a mismatch at tight end with a huge catch radius in LSU's Trey'Dez Green. The junior prospect would complement Cade Otton nicely.”
Green is already being discussed as one of the best tight ends in next year’s class, right there with Oregon’s Jamari Johnson. Those two are expected to go first at the position in the 2027 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-7 Green helped make his case in LSU’s 51-10 win over Clemson, finishing with four catches for 58 yards.
What makes Green such an appealing name for Tampa Bay is the mix of size and upside. He’s listed at 6'7" and 240 pounds, and he’s still getting comfortable at the position.
Even so, he’s already a headache for defenses down the seam and after the catch. He also brings a rare athletic profile, having played in six games for the LSU basketball team during his freshman season.
Green’s 2025 season was productive, too. He caught 33 passes for 433 yards and seven touchdowns, and he earned Second-team All-SEC honors along the way.
LSU coach Lane Kiffin has also spoken highly of Green this season. During a recent interview, Kiffin pointed to him as one of the Tigers’ important players.
“Well, they'll be familiar with them, but you know Trey'Dez Green, the tight end," said Kiffin when asked about key LSU players this season outside of Sam Leavitt.
For the Buccaneers, the appeal goes beyond just adding another pass catcher. Cade Otton has handled the tight end job since Tom Brady’s last year in 2022, starting 58 of his 63 career games and putting up a career-best 59 receptions for 572 yards and a touchdown last season. He’s been solid, but Green would bring a different kind of ceiling.
That matters even more with Mike Evans no longer in the picture. Evans is the all-time leading receiver in Buccaneers history in touchdown catches with 108, and Green could help soften that loss by giving Mayfield a true mismatch weapon in the middle of the field.
Sobleski also pointed to other first-round options for Tampa Bay, with the trenches still in play. Oregon defensive lineman A’Mauri Washington, Iowa offensive lineman Trevor Lauck, and Notre Dame edge rusher Boubacar Traore were all mentioned as possibilities.
Still, if the Buccaneers want to lean into playmaking for their quarterback, Green looks like the kind of pick that would turn heads fast.
