Buccaneers Let Another Strong Start Turn Into A Painful Debate

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had control of this one for most of the afternoon, and it still slipped away in overtime. What started as a firm grip on the game turned into a late collapse, and Pittsburgh walked out with a 26-19 win after Tampa Bay blew a big lead.

Tampa Bay’s first breakthrough came on defense, when Rueben Bain Jr. tipped an Aaron Rodgers pass and A’Shawn Robinson came down with it for his team-leading second interception of the season. The Bucs turned that takeaway into points, with Chase McLaughlin drilling a field goal that was blocked at the line but still managed to crawl over the crossbar. That put Tampa Bay up 3-0.

Pittsburgh answered with a long kick return that reached midfield before the play was wiped out by an illegal blindside block on Cole Holcomb. The Steelers did move the ball back after that, but a fourth-down decision ended badly when Germie Bernard reversed field and was tackled behind the line to gain, giving Tampa Bay the ball back on a turnover on downs.

The Buccaneers opened the second quarter with pace and confidence, and Jalon Daniels was at the center of it. Tampa Bay trusted the rookie to get the offense lined up quickly and throw the ball, and he delivered completions to Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka.

Ted Hurst III also got involved, and a downfield throw to him drew pass interference and set Tampa Bay up at the Pittsburgh one-yard line. Daniels finished the drive himself by tossing his first touchdown of the day to Emeka Egbuka, his first score since week two, making it 10-0.

Before halftime, Daniels and Egbuka nearly connected for another touchdown, but an overthrown ball forced an incompletion on a one-handed attempt. That drive still ended with three more points from Chase McLaughlin, pushing Tampa Bay’s lead to 13-0.

The Bucs’ defense kept bringing heat in the first half. Keonte Scott came free on a slot blitz for a sack, and then Rueben Bain Jr. added the first sack of his career against Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh finally got on the board late in the half after reaching field goal range and letting Chris Boswell make up for an earlier miss, trimming the deficit to 13-3.

The third quarter started with a strange twist on the Pittsburgh sideline, as Mike McCarthy sustained an injury walking off the field and spent halftime in the blue tent, leaving the Steelers without their head coach in the break. Pittsburgh opened the second half with a three-and-out, while Tampa Bay put together a long drive that ended in another field goal and a 16-3 lead.

The game stayed stuck in a punt exchange for a stretch, until Rodgers got moving again late in the third. Germie Bernard hauled in his eighth catch of the day to move Pittsburgh inside Tampa Bay territory, and after David Walker got home for a sack, Rodgers converted a third-and-16 by finding DK Metcalf for exactly 16 yards and a first down.

That play helped spark Pittsburgh’s rally. A roughing the passer penalty followed, and soon after the Steelers found the end zone when Darnell Washington got wide open to bring them within one score at 16-10.

Tampa Bay then gave the ball right back. Daniels tried to squeeze a throw to Emeka Egbuka against heavy coverage, and the result was an interception. Rodgers, meanwhile, saw his 10-straight completion streak end on what was his 16th consecutive pass, but Pittsburgh still cashed in on the turnover with another Boswell field goal to make it 16-13.

The Bucs had another chance to settle things down, but back-to-back Emeka Egbuka drops gave Pittsburgh the ball back again. Rodgers and Metcalf helped set up another field goal, and suddenly the game was tied 16-16.

Tampa Bay then put itself in danger when Jalon Daniels was picked off by Jamel Dean, who was a Buc, but is now a Steeler. The Steelers got all the way to the three-yard line, but they came away with nothing, using one run and two incomplete passes before turning it back over.

Daniels then answered after one of his roughest throws of the day, leading Tampa Bay down the field to set up a tying kick from, as the recap put it, “The best player on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster.” That made it 19-19 and sent the game to overtime.

The Buccaneers won the toss and chose to kick, but the defensive problems that surfaced late in regulation carried straight into the extra period. Tampa Bay’s tackling fell apart, Pittsburgh kept hammering away, and the Steelers eventually punched in the winning touchdown for the 26-19 finish.

Bucs Inactive List Creates One Big Problem Against Pittsburgh

The Buccaneers arrived for Week 6 already thin in a few key spots, and their inactive list only sharpened the edge of the matchup with Pittsburgh. Baker Mayfield and Antoine Winfield Jr. are both out with multi-week injuries, which keeps Tampa Bay without its starting quarterback and one of its most important defenders as it tries to navigate another difficult week.

Easton Stick is back as the backup quarterback for the third straight game, while the backfield got another shake-up with Sean Tucker inactive and Josh Williams elevated for the game. The Steelers brought their own list of absences into the afternoon as well, including receivers Ben Skowronek and Roman Wilson, while cornerback Jamel Dean was active and Sean Murphy-Bunting was not, leaving both sides to work around some familiar lineup uncertainty. Buccaneers Face A Brutal Test If Two Problems Don't Improve

Bucky Irving gave Tampa Bay exactly the kind of spark it needed last week, piling up a career-high 165 rushing yards and adding a rushing-plus-receiving touchdown against Dallas. If the Buccaneers are going to keep up that momentum against Pittsburgh, they may need Irving to stay central to the plan while the offense also gets quarterback Jalon Daniels into a cleaner early rhythm.

The matchup gets even trickier if Tampa Bay cannot tighten up two areas that have been lagging. The Bucs have had trouble getting after the quarterback, with only six sacks in five games, and they are still waiting for a first-career sack from Rueben Bain Jr., while also having to deal with Steelers back Jaylen Warren and the usual turnover battle that can swing a close game fast. Luke Goedeke Is Becoming A Bucs Strength Where Fans Once Worried

Luke Goedeke has gone from an early source of concern to one of the more dependable pieces on Tampa Bays offensive line. After beginning his career with the Buccaneers at left guard and running into real growing pains, he found a better fit at right tackle and has settled in as a steady pass protector beside Tristan Wirfs.

The result has been a far more secure edge for the Bucs than many fans expected when Goedeke first arrived. His consistency has given Tampa Bay a valuable presence on the line and a reminder that development in the NFL is not always linear, especially for linemen who need the right position and the right role to show what they can do.
