Buccaneers Just Put Fresh Pressure On Dallas After That Collapse

Deck: After a surprising setback against the Buccaneers, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer plans a thorough evaluation of his coaching staff to reignite their faltering season.

The Cowboys didn’t just lose Thursday night in Tampa Bay. They walked out of it with a mini-bye full of hard questions, and Brian Schottenheimer made it clear he plans to spend it digging through every layer of the mess.

Dallas fell 24-16 to a Buccaneers team that had been winless, dropping the Cowboys to 2-3. Jerry Jones tried to cool things down afterward, saying it was “premature” to talk about changes to the coaching staff. Schottenheimer, though, didn’t sound interested in brushing anything aside.

“Yeah, I'm going to look at everything,” Schottenheimer said about possible staff changes, per Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' website. “I'll spend countless hours trying to figure it out and getting a chance to step back, look at these five games, and see what we need to improve. ...

Yeah, I think we evaluate everything, but at the end of the day, we're five games in. I am disappointed in the way we performed this evening as a football team, and that's just going to be one part of the process.

We're going to look at all five games and get a chance to slow down our process and look at every detail and see what we need to improve.”

That evaluation may have to start with a defense that has been giving the Cowboys nowhere to hide. First-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker was already drawing heat from some fans before Thursday’s loss, and Tampa Bay piled up 419 total yards against Dallas. The Buccaneers were without Baker Mayfield, who was sidelined by a thumb injury, and started undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels.

The numbers around Dallas’s defense have gotten ugly fast. According to ESPN stats, the Cowboys entered the night ranked 31st in the league in total yards allowed per game at 395.4 and 26th in points allowed at 27.2 per game.

On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys also came up short against an opponent they were supposed to handle. Dallas is supposed to be responsible for the “greatest offense there is,” but it managed only two touchdown drives against a team that came in as an 8.5-point underdog.

Schottenheimer didn’t sugarcoat the broader picture.

“We got to stack wins,” he said. “And like I said, this weekend's going to be a process.

We're going to go through the process. We're going to figure it out.

We're going to put on the tape. We're going to watch the tape.

We're going to look at the stats. We're going to look at everything, and we're going to make some decisions that we believe will give us the best chance to pick back up and play well next week.

We're five games in, and we didn't plan on being 2-3. I am disappointed by that, for sure, but we're just getting started.

There's a lot of football left, and we got to play better. We know that.”

Dallas now has a short break before turning to its next game, a “Sunday Night Football” trip to the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 18. That pause gives Schottenheimer time to sort through the staff, the tape and the roster, and it could be the moment when he decides whether changes are needed.

Jones may still be looking for another big-name addition before the season moves deeper into fall, but Schottenheimer sounded confident in the group he had Thursday night.

“This game, the NFL, comes down to finishing games,” Schottenheimer added. “And the way these guys work, the way this brotherhood is, the culture, the way the connection of the guys in that room [is], is special. And because of that, I see a group of young men that are motivated to get it right.”

Todd Bowles Had A Sideline Scare During Bucs' First Win

The Buccaneers first win of the season came with a brief sideline scare for Todd Bowles, who was caught up in the kind of post-play celebration that can get chaotic in a hurry. Late in the fourth quarter against the Cowboys, Tampa Bay was erupting after an interception and a run by Buccaneers players when Bowles took a shot in the stomach from a helmet, turning a moment of relief into a few tense seconds on the sideline.

Bowles was seen grimacing and dropping to one knee before being reported as okay shortly after, which allowed the focus to shift back to a much-needed victory. The incident was part of the emotional release that followed the play, though reports did not identify which player made the celebratory contact. [Read more 🡒]

Dak Prescott's Postgame Frustration Has Cowboys Fans Debating This Team

The Cowboys left Thursday night with another loss, and the postgame mood around AT&T Stadium turned testy almost immediately. Dallas dropped to 2-3 after falling to the Buccaneers, and what should have been a straightforward reaction to a rough defeat quickly shifted when Dak Prescott took issue with a stadium workers comment about the result being embarrassing.

Prescott made clear he can live with blunt criticism, but he was bothered by the way the exchange unfolded after he noticed the comment. For Tampa Bay, it was the kind of road win that does more than add to the standings, because it also leaves the opponent sorting through frustration, accountability and a little bit of drama long after the final whistle. Todd Bowles Sideline Scare Added Tension To A Much-Needed Bucs Win

The Buccaneers finally got the result they needed, beating the Cowboys 24-16 for their first win of the season behind rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels. It was a much-needed lift for a team that had spent the first month looking for something to stabilize around, and getting to 1-4 at least gives Tampa Bay a little breathing room heading into next weeks matchup with the Steelers.

The win came with a brief scare on the sideline when Todd Bowles was seen down on one knee and appeared to be dealing with discomfort before getting back up and saying he would be okay. For a team already trying to find its footing, even a moment like that can add tension to an afternoon that should have been about relief, and it only underscored how much the Bucs needed a cleaner, calmer path to their first victory.
