Buccaneers Just Made History In A Way Fans Wont Believe

In a historic NFL moment, the Buccaneers outmatched the Falcons with sheer ground dominance despite Mayfield's off day in the air.

Baker Mayfield didn’t complete a pass Sunday, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still walked out of Raymond James Stadium with a 16-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons and a place in NFL history.

Tampa Bay became the first team since 1974 to win a game with zero completions and zero passing yards, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. The last club to pull that off was the Buffalo Bills, who beat the New York Jets 16-12 on Sept. 29, 1974.

The Bucs also joined a much older line of teams by winning by double digits without completing a pass. NFL Researcher noted the last team to do that was the 1945 Pittsburgh Steelers, who beat the Chicago Cardinals 23-0 in Week 8.

Mayfield went 0-for-3, with targets going to Ted Hurst, Chris Godwin and Kenneth Gainwell. He was sacked once for a two-yard loss, and Tampa Bay finished with minus-two net passing yards. Heavy rain made the afternoon messy, and Mayfield also mishandled multiple snaps, though he recovered each one.

The conditions pushed Tampa Bay toward the ground game, and that was clearly the plan. The Buccaneers leaned on a rushing attack that had already piled up 258 yards against Carolina the week before, and this time it exploded for a franchise-record 324 yards on 56 carries.

Bucky Irving led the charge with a career-high 170 yards and a touchdown on 27 attempts. Gainwell added a career-best 140 yards on 25 carries, while Mayfield chipped in 14 rushing yards on four attempts.

The defense made sure the Bucs could keep feeding the run. Linebacker Alex Anzalone intercepted Michael Penix Jr. twice, and cornerbacks Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum each picked him off once. Atlanta managed just 224 total yards and never converted on any of its 12 third-down chances.

Tampa Bay has now won two straight even though Mayfield has completed only seven passes for 64 yards across those games. In that span, the Buccaneers have rushed for 582 yards and allowed just 13 points.

Bucs Next Two Games Could Force A Deadline Decision Licht Hates

Jason Licht has never been eager to deal players away, and that history is part of what makes the next stretch so important for Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers are staring at a deadline decision that could force the front office into a move it would rather avoid, with the next two games serving as the kind of test that can change how a team views its own roster and its chances for the rest of the season.

If the Bucs fail to win at least one of those games, the conversation around potential trade candidates could get loud in a hurry. Several veterans are already being discussed as possible chips, and the mix of contract situations and recent production gives Tampa Bay plenty to weigh before the deadline arrives, even if Lichts instinct has always been to hold rather than sell. Bucs Face A Huge NFC South Test As Turnaround Gets Real

The Buccaneers are stepping into a game that can tell a lot about where this season is headed, and the timing could hardly be bigger. Tampa Bay and Atlanta meet in a crucial NFC South matchup that could help shape the division race, with both clubs trying to turn early-season frustration into something more stable. The Bucs come in off a win over Carolina, while the Falcons have their own momentum after beating San Francisco, which gives this one the feel of a real checkpoint rather than just another divisional date on the schedule.

For Tampa Bay, the spotlight stays on Baker Mayfield and Bucky Irving as the offense tries to keep building after the recent uptick. Atlanta brings plenty of problems of its own, especially with Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts giving the Falcons two dangerous options to lean on. The Bucs have already shown they can respond after a rough stretch, but this is the kind of test that can reveal whether the turnaround is for real or still a work in progress. [Read more 🡒]

Baker Mayfield Gives Bucs A Bigger Concern Than This Win

The Buccaneers got the result they needed in a sloppy, rain-soaked divisional game, blanking Atlanta 16-0 and leaning hard on a ground attack that carried the offense from start to finish. It was the kind of win that can steady a team in the standings, but it also laid bare how much Tampa Bay had to lean away from its passing game just to survive the weather and the moment.

Baker Mayfields latest uneven outing only sharpened the concern. Since returning, he has not consistently pushed the ball through the air, and Tampa Bay will need more balance than this if it wants to keep winning when conditions are normal and defenses can key on the run. The defense did its part, the rushing game did more than enough, and the bigger question now is whether the offense can find a more reliable version of itself before the schedule tightens.
