Buccaneers GM Stirs Buzz Over Trey Hendrickson Speculation

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht discusses the considerations behind passing on star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, shedding light on the team's strategic priorities and future plans.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Trey Hendrickson have parted ways, and while there was buzz about Hendrickson potentially joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it wasn't meant to be. Instead, Hendrickson inked a deal with the Baltimore Ravens. Buccaneers GM Jason Licht addressed the rumors, confirming that the team did explore the possibility of signing Hendrickson.

Hendrickson, a formidable pass-rusher, led the NFL in sacks from 2023 to 2024 with 35 to his name. However, his 2025 season was cut short to just seven games due to core surgery in December. Despite concerns over his health and age-he's now 31-the Ravens offered him a lucrative four-year, $112 million contract, with $60 million guaranteed and potential earnings up to $120 million.

Licht wasn't inclined to match such a hefty price tag. Instead, the Buccaneers opted for a more budget-friendly choice, signing Al-Quadin Muhammad from the Detroit Lions to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. Muhammad had an impressive season, tying for 11th in the league with 11 sacks.

The Buccaneers wrapped up the 2025 season tied for 18th in total team sacks, a stat that underscores their need for a defensive powerhouse. However, Licht emphasized a strategic approach, considering future flexibility and draft picks, which influenced their decision not to pursue Hendrickson aggressively.

If Hendrickson can regain his top form and maintain his health, this decision might be one Licht looks back on with some regret, given the Buccaneers' evident need for a standout defensive player.
