The Buccaneers got a welcome sign on Wednesday, but Antoine Winfield Jr.’s Week 7 availability is still up in the air.
Winfield returned to practice after sitting out the previous two games because of a rib injury he picked up against the Green Bay Packers in Week 4. The team’s October 21 update showed the safety working in a non-contact jersey, a clear sign of progress without quite getting him back to full speed.
“He's recovering,” head coach Todd Bowles said. “He's going to have to practice first for him to come back and not have a non-contact jersey on.
So I think he's getting there. I don't know if he's there yet.
We'll see what tomorrow and Friday bring.”
On the injury report, Winfield was listed as a limited participant Wednesday. That at least gives Tampa Bay something to hang onto before Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, but the real test will come if he can shed the non-contact designation before the weekend.
The timing matters. The Buccaneers are coming off a painful 26-19 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, a game they controlled for most of the day before letting a 16-3 lead slip away in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay had trouble getting off the field late, and that’s exactly where Winfield’s presence could matter most.
His value is obvious. Winfield gives the Buccaneers flexibility in coverage, against the run, and near the line of scrimmage. That kind of range could be especially useful against a Carolina offense led by quarterback Bryce Young and running back Chuba Hubbard.
Tampa Bay enters Week 7 at 1-5, so Sunday’s NFC South matchup carries obvious weight. Wednesday was a positive step for Winfield, but the Buccaneers still need Thursday and Friday to tell the rest of the story.

Bucs Rookie Jalon Daniels Got A Moment Fans Will Want To See
Jalon Daniels has already had a stretch with the Buccaneers that most rookies only imagine, stepping into the starting role after Baker Mayfields injury and living through both an encouraging win and a tough loss in those early outings. So when the backup quarterback got the chance to line up across from Aaron Rodgers after Tampa Bays game against the Steelers, it was the kind of crossover moment that felt bigger than the scoreboard.
The postgame exchange added another layer to a night Daniels will remember, with the two quarterbacks meeting and swapping jerseys after the game. Rodgers also made a point to show respect for Daniels during the CBS broadcast, and for a young passer trying to settle into his place in the league, that kind of attention from an idol carries a little extra weight. Buccaneers Face A Trade Deadline Twist If Sunday Goes Wrong
The next week could say a lot about how the Buccaneers view the rest of this season, and not just because of what happens on the field against Carolina. Tampa Bay is sitting at 1-5, yet still technically alive in the NFC South race, which puts a real spotlight on the game and the front offices appetite for patience heading toward the November 10 trade deadline.
If things go badly on Sunday, the conversation around the roster may shift quickly from chasing a division title to weighing veteran value. ESPNs Jeremy Fowler has pointed to the possibility of Tampa Bay becoming a seller in the right circumstances, with names like Chris Godwin, Kenneth Gainwell and Vita Vea already surfacing in the discussion, though no move has been made. For a team that still has postseason hope, the stakes feel unusually split between the scoreboard and the trade market. [Read more 🡒]
Buccaneers Just Caught A Huge Break For Baker Mayfield In Week 7
The Buccaneers got a helpful development ahead of their Week 7 matchup with Carolina, as the Panthers will be missing a key edge presence after Jaelan Phillips was officially ruled out because of a hamstring injury. Tampa Bay has been looking for every edge it can find in a division game on the road, and taking one of Carolinas more disruptive defenders off the board changes the picture a bit for Baker Mayfield and an offense that can use a cleaner pocket.
Phillips had already sat out the Panthers three practices leading into the game, and Carolinas final injury report offered more uncertainty beyond him. Thomas Incoom is also set to miss the matchup with a calf injury, leaving the Panthers thinner up front than they would prefer as they try to slow down Tampa Bay. [Read more 🡒]
