Dean Patterson has become one of the most intriguing names in Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp, and not because he arrived with much fanfare. Through eight days of work and the start of the ninth, the undrafted rookie wideout has been one of the biggest risers on the roster.
Some camp standouts were expected. Linebacker Alex Anzalone and cornerback Zyon McCollum fit that bill.
Others have popped as useful surprises, like edge rusher David Walker and UDFA cornerback Ayden Garnes. But Patterson may have outpaced them all in terms of how much he’s helped himself.
A Tampa Bay native and Georgia Tech product, Patterson earned his way onto the roster as a tryout player during rookie minicamp. Since then, he’s kept stacking good days, and the extra reps have come his way because of injuries at wide receiver. He’s taken full advantage.
Friday’s Day 8 practice was another strong showing. Patterson hauled in a touchdown during 11-on-11 work and also made a tough grab on the right sideline, getting both feet down. Earlier in camp, he had already turned heads during an indoor Day 6 session on Tuesday night, when he caught two touchdowns in red zone work.
That kind of production has not gone unnoticed by Todd Bowles, who pointed to Patterson’s preparation as a major reason he’s been able to keep making plays while filling in for injured receivers like Jalen McMillan, Tez Johnson and David Sills.
"He's getting an opportunity to play. With a couple guys down, he's getting an opportunity to play.
He studies, and that's a big part of it," Bowles said. "Grabbing it mentally is probably more demanding than grabbing it physically, but if you can grab it mentally - which he's doing right now - and [make] plays and [show] up on tape, that gets you seen a lot.
We’ll look forward to seeing him in the preseason."
That next step matters. Patterson spent one season at Georgia Tech after four years at FIU, and in that lone Power 4 campaign he finished with eight catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Camp has shown he belongs in the conversation, but preseason games will be the real test.
He won’t have to wait long. The Buccaneers have one more public training camp practice on Aug. 9 before heading to New York for joint practices with the Jets and then preseason action.

Rueben Bain Jr. arrived in Tampa Bay as the kind of first-round pick who can reshape a defense quickly, and the Buccaneers are already treating him like more than a developmental project. Selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, Bain drew plenty of praise from coaches, teammates and analysts for his football IQ and overall skill set, the sort of traits that can help a rookie earn trust fast once training camp opens.
For a team looking for more impact off the edge, Bain is expected to compete for a starting job right away and could push his way into the top pass-rushing role before long. There was some concern about his arm length during the pre-draft process, but the Buccaneers still made him a first-round priority, and now the focus shifts to how quickly he can turn that belief into production.
