The Buccaneers are heading into camp with a clear eye on the future along the offensive line, and that could put Dan Feeney in a tough spot.
Tampa Bay brought Feeney in for the 2025 season, and he ended up starting 10 of his 12 games. It was another stop in a career that has already taken him through a lot of locker rooms.
He spent his first four seasons with the Chargers, then two with the Jets, and has now changed teams in each of the last three years. He’s trying to carve out a second season in Tampa Bay, but the path is getting crowded.
The name to watch is rookie Billy Schrauth. If Schrauth makes a strong enough push, Feeney could be the veteran squeezed out of the picture.
There’s only so much that can be learned in OTAs and minicamps, especially with no pads on. Training camp is where the real battles start, and for players on the edge of the roster, that’s where jobs are won and lost.
Ben Bredeson looks set to hold down left guard. The six-year veteran is entering his third year with the Buccaneers and seventh in the league, and he has started every game he has played for Tampa Bay.
On the other side, Cody Mauch is expected to reclaim his starting spot after missing all but two games in 2025 because of injury. Before that, he had started all 17 games in each of his first two seasons. With Mauch healthy again, the right side gets even tighter.
That leaves Feeney fighting deeper down the depth chart, and the competition there is younger and more crowded. The Buccaneers list nine players as guards, and six of them have fewer than three years of experience. Tampa Bay clearly likes that youth.
The roster math makes things even trickier for Jason Licht. The Bucs list only one center and six tackles, and teams often value linemen who can move around. A tackle who can also handle guard carries extra weight, and Feeney’s ability to play center could help him.
Still, the veteran is staring at an uphill climb. He’ll need a strong camp to convince the staff that his experience matters more than a rookie still getting his feet under him.
Schrauth is not expected to jump straight into a starting job ahead of Mauch or Bredeson, but he also doesn’t look like a player who’s headed for the cut line. Tampa Bay used a fifth-round pick on him, and that gives him some room to work through mistakes. Feeney may not get that same cushion.
