Buccaneers Already Have Two Tough Offseason Contract Decisions

As Yaya Diaby and Cody Mauch underperform in their contract year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face straightforward decisions on future deals.

The Buccaneers may already have two of their toughest offseason calls answered for them.

Outside linebacker Yaya Diaby and right guard Cody Mauch are both in the final year of their rookie deals, and neither has done enough through the first quarter of the 2026 season to push Tampa Bay toward an extension. Both entered the year with the kind of upside that can shape a roster. Both have instead stumbled into a contract year that’s doing them no favors.

Diaby looked like the cleaner bet. For his first three seasons in Tampa Bay, he was the team’s main edge threat and still managed to create pressure even without a reliable partner on the other side. He led the Buccaneers in sacks in two of those three seasons, which made him a natural candidate to take off once the front office beefed up the defensive line.

The Buccaneers added Rueben Bain Jr., Al-Aquarian Muhammad and A’Shawn Robinson this offseason, giving Diaby more help than he’d had before. That setup was supposed to open things up. Instead, the production has gone backward.

Through four games, Diaby has six pressures and no sacks. Pro Football Focus has him ranked 109th out of 110 edge rushers in pass-rush grade.

He’s still doing his part against the run, but the pass-rushing numbers are the ones that matter here, and they’ve been ugly enough to make his market value look hard to justify. Spotrac estimates that number at around $18.1 million annually.

Mauch’s case is different, but the result is the same. Before a season-ending injury in Week 2 last year, he was playing at a Pro Bowl level.

Now that he’s back, he looks like a player trying to shake off the rust. There’s still time for that to change, but right now he’s not giving Tampa Bay much reason to rush into a new deal.

PFF has Mauch ranked 67th among 74 qualifying guards. He’s allowed 11 pressures and a sack in pass protection, but the real damage has come in the run game, where his 35.5 run-blocking grade is second-worst at the position.

With Baker Mayfield and Vita Vea also looming as major free-agent decisions, Diaby and Mauch are quickly becoming the easiest names on the list to read. If the season ended today, both would be headed toward free agency without new contracts from Tampa Bay.

Todd Bowles Heat Is Rising But Bucs History Says Plenty Too

The early part of the 2026 season has not gone the way Tampa Bay hoped, and the frustration is starting to spill over beyond the standings. Todd Bowles is suddenly part of the league-wide coaching conversation, with some bettors even tagging him as a possible first firing of the year, a reflection of how quickly the temperature can rise when a veteran team stumbles out of the gate.

Still, the Buccaneers own history matters here. Bowles is 35-37 in the regular season and 1-3 in the postseason since taking over in 2022, so there is real pressure around the program, but Tampa Bay ownership has not made a habit of cutting loose head coaches in the middle of a season. That track record makes any in-season move feel unlikely for now, even if the noise around Bowles keeps getting louder. [Read more 🡒]

Buccaneers Face A Brutal Thursday Test With Early Pressure Mounting

Thursday night brings a tricky reset point for Tampa Bay, which heads into Week 5 still searching for its first win and doing it without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. The spotlight is on the kind of primetime matchup that can either steady a season or deepen the early damage, and the Buccaneers are walking into a Dallas team that will be eager to respond in front of its own crowd.

For Tampa Bay, the challenge is not just surviving the short week but finding enough stability to hang around against a Cowboys team that needs better defense while counting on its offense to set the tone at home. The matchup feels like a steep ask already, and the expectation around it is leaning heavily toward Dallas taking control by a wide margin. [Read more 🡒]

Bucs Get One Key Piece Back As Injuries Test Them Vs Cowboys

The Buccaneers are getting a needed lift back on the edge with Rueben Bain Jr. returning from injury for their matchup with the Cowboys, a welcome development for a defense that has been forced to juggle pieces early. Tampa Bays injury list still has some bite, though, and the secondary remains the area to watch with Antoine Winfield Jr. and Benjamin Morrison both out.

Winfield Jr. is dealing with a fractured rib, leaving the Bucs without one of their most important defensive backs as they try to slow Dallas. Amid the churn, kicker McLaughlin has stayed healthy and continued the strong form he carried over from last season, giving Tampa Bay at least one steady presence as the roster works through another tough week.
