The Buccaneers didn’t come away from Week 1 with the result they wanted, but Todd Bowles saw enough from his defensive front to point out a few bright spots.
Tampa Bay gave up 33 points to the Bengals in the loss, yet the number on the scoreboard doesn’t tell the whole story. Cincinnati had trouble finding easy running room, with the Bucs limiting the Bengals to 3.9 yards per carry. Ja'Marr Chase also never got loose, finishing with just two catches for 14 yards.
Still, the game turned on mistakes. Four lost fumbles by Tampa Bay handed Cincinnati short fields, and that proved costly.
After the game, Bowles singled out Calijah Kancey for special praise on the Buccaneers Radio Network.
"I thought Calijah Kancey played his butt off," Bowles said on the Buccaneers Radio Network. "I thought Kancey played well."
That kind of performance matters for Kancey, who missed significant time with injury last season. The former first-round pick had 7.5 sacks in his sophomore campaign, and if he keeps producing, he and Vita Vea could become one of the NFC’s best interior pass-rushing pairings.
Bowles also touched on Vea, saying his conditioning was "fine," while noting there is still rust to shake off. Vea missed most of training camp and the preseason because of lingering injuries while also dealing with contract disputes. The former No. 12 overall pick had even requested a trade before the two sides reached common ground ahead of the season.
Even with the missed time, Vea’s familiarity with Bowles should help him get back on track quickly. At Thursday’s practice, he was working on the fundamentals and hand placement techniques Bowles mentioned as part of that process.
Another lineman Bowles liked was A'Shawn Robinson, who joined Tampa Bay from the NFC South-rival Carolina Panthers in free agency.
"I thought A’Shawn Robinson played very tough up in there," Bowles said. "A’Shawn played well."
Robinson ended up with the strongest box score of the group, finishing with five total tackles and a QB hit. His ability to handle multiple spots along the defensive line gives Bowles more flexibility both on the edge and inside.
