Baker Mayfield, the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is entering the final year of his contract. However, Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht has hinted that a contract extension might be on the horizon.
When asked about the possibility of locking in Mayfield for the long term, Licht stated, “Everything’s on the table right now.” While there isn’t a set timeline, Licht emphasized that the team's future plans prominently feature Mayfield.
“We don’t want to see Baker leave the organization,” Licht remarked. “Having been with him for three years, we know all we need to know, and it’s all positive.
He’s tough, a great leader. All plans revolve around Baker.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 league year, the Bucs are projected to have around $23 million in cap space. Licht highlighted the team’s strategic approach to contracts, ensuring they maintain the flexibility needed to extend key players and attract impactful free agents. “We pride ourselves on having flexibility for whatever might come up,” Licht explained.
Mayfield’s presence on the team is also seen as a major draw for potential free agents, akin to the allure Tom Brady once held. “It was like when we had Tom,” Licht said. “A lot of players love the thought of playing with Baker, on both sides of the ball.”
