Baker Mayfield keeps showing up in quarterback conversations, and this time the buzz points to a destination that would turn plenty of heads: Pittsburgh.
The idea has surfaced from more than one corner in recent days. Dan Graziano of ESPN raised it while discussing 2027 quarterback scenarios, noting that Mayfield could be the next veteran quarterback to land with the Steelers, a franchise that has cycled through Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Aaron Rodgers since Ben Roethlisberger retired.
“Who knows? Maybe he’s the latest veteran to land with the Steelers,” wrote Graziano.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk made a similar point and went a step further, suggesting Mayfield might even be willing to take less money to make it happen.
“I could see him taking less money to go to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is the perfect - it just feels like the perfect destination for him,” Florio said.
For now, the more immediate reality still centers on Tampa Bay. Mayfield has said he wants to finish his career with his current team, and stalled extension talks have only sharpened the focus on what comes next.
A long-term deal remains the likeliest outcome. The team could also use the franchise tag, but Graziano pointed to the dead money issue as a reason a new contract makes more sense.
“The Bucs could use the franchise tag on him, but with about $30 million in dead money set to hit their 2027 cap because of Mayfield’s contract voiding, they’re better off giving in to his demands and signing him to a long-term contract before the void date,” wrote Graziano.
“Mayfield says he wants to finish his career as a Buc.”
Still, the possibility of a different landing spot can’t be dismissed entirely. If negotiations drag on or Mayfield’s play changes the market, other teams could enter the picture.
A big season could push Tampa Bay out of range on an extension, opening the door for a team with cap room to make a run. A down year could have the opposite effect, making him a more affordable option for a club looking for competition and stability.
That’s where Pittsburgh fits the discussion. The Steelers have spent recent years searching for consistency at quarterback, and the organization continues to look for a more settled answer at the position.
There’s also a twist baked into the rumor: Mayfield was once drafted by the Browns, and the thought of him ending up with their longtime rival gives the story an extra edge.
For now, though, the speculation remains exactly that. Graziano still sees an extension with Tampa Bay as the primary path, while the Steelers continue to be mentioned as a possible fallback if the situation changes. What happens next will depend on the coming season and how the contract talks unfold.
