Baker Mayfield's Thumb Suddenly Looms Over A Crucial Bucs Stretch

Baker Mayfield's anticipated return could ignite the Buccaneers' playoff push, especially with a potential revenge game against the Panthers on the horizon.

There’s reason to think Baker Mayfield’s absence from Week 6 won’t last much longer, even if he’s definitely out against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hoping to have their quarterback back on the field within the next week or so after the thumb injury that sidelined him. The timing matters because Tampa Bay has already been leaning on survival mode, and the idea is that Mayfield needs to return soon if the team is going to look anything like the version it expected heading into the season.

That possibility still appears alive. Rick Stroud reported that Mayfield is expected to test his grip and throwing ability, though there’s no guarantee yet that he can do it effectively.

If he doesn’t recover faster than expected, Jalon Daniels is set to start against the Steelers. After that comes a Week 7 trip to Carolina, which is the likelier spot for Mayfield’s return.

“Fully expect Baker Mayfield to test his ability to grip and throw the football today. Whether he can do that effectively is to be determined.

Jalon Daniels is expected to start vs. Steelers unless Mayfield recovers more quickly than expected.

Next game is at Carolina following the Steelers Sunday,” Rick Stroud wrote.

The Buccaneers have at least managed to stay afloat, helped in part by Daniels getting a win for them against the Dallas Cowboys. But that kind of patchwork approach can only buy so much time.

If Mayfield comes back and starts stacking wins late in the season, Tampa Bay should still be in decent shape. The cushion, though, isn’t endless.

The NFC South is weak, but not weak enough for the Buccaneers to get by on six or seven wins and expect everything to sort itself out. They still need to figure something out.

Buccaneers Face A Familiar Problem Against Aaron Rodgers In Week 6

The Buccaneers head into their matchup with the Steelers looking to steady a season that still feels very much in progress, and the chess match up front could shape the afternoon as much as anything else. Tampa Bay has gotten encouraging signs on the ground from Bucky Irving, while Pittsburgh has leaned on a versatile offense built around Jaylin Warren, who has become the Steelers most productive weapon out of the backfield.

For Tampa Bay, the bigger concern is whether its defense can create enough disruption to make life uncomfortable for Aaron Rodgers. The Buccaneers have struggled to finish plays with their pass rush, and that is exactly the kind of issue Rodgers tends to expose. If the Bucs are going to leave with a result that helps their record, they will likely need more than just solid offense and a clean game script. [Read more 🡒]

Rueben Bain Jr. Is Giving The Bucs A Needed Defensive Hope

Rueben Bain Jr.s rookie season with the Buccaneers has been more about patience than splash plays so far, which is not what anyone envisioned when Tampa Bay added him to help the edge rush. The outside linebacker has been slowed by injuries, but the broader need is obvious: the Bucs have a strong secondary and are still looking for a pass rush that can make life easier on the back end and give the defense a more complete feel.

There are signs the picture may be turning. Larry Foote has liked what he has seen from Bain lately, and the rookie appears to be moving better after working through the shoulder and groin issues that interrupted his early progress. Tampa Bay can live with a developmental arc if the payoff comes later, but getting more from Bain would be especially important with the rest of the defense trying to build on that complementary structure. Former Buccaneer Just Turned Up Tampa Bay's Quarterback Debate

Leonard Fournette has jumped into a quarterback conversation that already had plenty of weight around it, backing Jalon Daniels to keep the starting job for the Buccaneers even when Baker Mayfield is healthy again. The former Tampa Bay back said Daniels is a better fit for the offense and pointed to Mayfields turnovers as a reason the team has had trouble finding its rhythm, adding another layer to a debate that has been building as the injury situation unfolds.

Jarvis Landry quickly offered a different read, defending Mayfield as the teams starter and a proven winner while describing Daniels as a quality backup. For Tampa Bay, the split adds some outside heat to a decision that will eventually land back with the coaches, but it also shows how much the position still feels unsettled with Mayfield working his way back.
