Why This Syracuse Visit Turned Heads For A Rising New York Big

A promising New York recruit's unofficial visit to Syracuse gets a special touch as he meets a basketball legend, positioning the school as a key contender in his college decision.

Damian Mojica’s first unofficial visit to Syracuse basketball appears to have checked a big box for the New York forward.

The 2028 three-star power forward from New York state was on campus Monday, and the visit reportedly went well. The 6-foot-8 Mojica also had the chance to meet Syracuse legend Carmelo Anthony, who was at SU’s practice that day. For a player from New York who grew up watching the Knicks, that had to be a memorable moment.

Syracuse men’s basketball even highlighted the connection on social media with the message, “Orange runs deep 🍊 pic.twitter.com/4MDVvLe47P”

Mojica, a rising junior, is still early in his recruitment, but Syracuse is already in the mix. Since June 15, when college coaches were first allowed to begin direct contact with 2028 prospects, he has heard from multiple programs, including the Orange.

His list of suitors also includes Stanford, Notre Dame, East Carolina, Towson, Oral Roberts, Buffalo, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Delaware, among others. His early scholarship offers come from East Carolina, Kennesaw State, Hofstra, Oral Roberts and Arkansas-Little Rock.

Syracuse has not offered him yet, but that could change down the road. The Orange staff is expected to keep tabs on him during next month’s two live periods on the AAU circuit, and he is likely to be watched by Syracuse in EYBL play.

Mojica is a standout at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., which competes in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council, and he is playing this spring and summer for the 16U team of the Bronx-based PSA Cardinals in Nike’s EYBL league.

His profile is starting to rise, too. Rivals has him ranked No. 114 overall in the 2028 class, No. 21 among power forwards and No. 2 in New York. Scouts and analysts believe his recent play on the EYBL circuit and at other events has put him on track to push for four-star status in the coming months.

A scouting note from 365 Recruits described him as “an elite 3 level scorer that finishes through contact very well. He showed his ability to be a point forward which showcased his very good passing skills. He is also a lockdown defender that can guard multiple positions.”

Mojica’s PSA Cardinals teammates Kingsley Rogers, Kevin Wheatley Jr. and Malik Moore have also heard from the new Syracuse staff since the 2028 contact period opened in mid-June.

Syracuse Just Entered An Early Recruiting Battle Fans Need To Watch

Syracuses first-year staff under Gerry McNamara is already working the kind of early board that can shape a class years down the line, and one of the latest names to surface is a rising 2028 wing from The Phelps School in Pennsylvania. The Orange reached out as the contact period opened for high school juniors, putting themselves in the mix for a player who has quickly drawn attention from a range of high-major programs.

The competition is going to be real here, and that is what makes the pursuit worth watching. Recruiting analysts already view him as one of the better prospects in the country for his class, and Syracuse is now trying to establish itself early against programs with plenty of pull of their own. In a cycle this far out, the schools that get in first can matter, but they still have a lot of work to do from here. [Read more 🡒]

Another Local Syracuse Commit Is Fueling Fran Browns 2027 Momentum

Noah Collins-Howards June official visit to Syracuse gave the Orange another reminder of why the local recruiting pipeline has been such a useful part of Fran Browns push. The three-star wide receiver from Rush-Henrietta High School had already committed back in March, but the trip let him spend more time around the staff and future teammates and keep building on the connection that helped bring one of New Yorks top prospects into the fold.

Collins-Howard is ranked as the No. 9 overall prospect in the state and is part of a 2027 class that keeps getting bigger by the week. Syracuse has now landed 22 commitments, and the Orange have been especially active in June as Brown continues to stack pledges and reinforce the culture that has made local recruits comfortable staying close to home. Syracuses New 7-Footer Could Change Everything On Defense

Abdramane Sibys path to Syracuse has already been unusual before he ever steps into a college game. The 7-foot prospect from Mali went from there to Italy at 13, later spent time in Serbia, and now arrives in Central New York with the kind of frame and defensive profile that can change how a team plays around the rim.

Syracuse coach Gerry McNamara has made it clear the Orange needed more shot-altering ability, and Siby fits that need with his length, athleticism and defensive instincts. Scout Jonathan Givony has also been high on the pickup, and the next question for Syracuse is how quickly Siby can turn that promise into a reliable interior presence. [Read more 🡒]
