Syracuses 2027 Recruiting Plan Just Got A Lot Clearer

In a pivotal decision for Syracuse's 2027 recruiting class, highly sought-after Ahmed Nur chooses Ole Miss, leaving Syracuse to lean on international and transfer portal strategies.

Syracuse’s 2027 recruiting class may already be set, and the final piece appears to have landed elsewhere.

Four-star wing/forward Ahmed Nur, who took an official visit to the Orange in late August, verbally committed to Ole Miss on Saturday, according to reports. The 6-foot-9, 190-pound prospect also made official visits to Florida State and SMU before choosing the Southeastern Conference program.

Nur’s trip to Syracuse was viewed as a strong one, and assistant coach Ben Lee was back to see him after the fall recruiting period opened on September 9. Lee attended an open gym at CIA Bella Vista in Phoenix, where Nur plays his senior season after transferring there from his previous school. CIA Bella Vista won the national championship last season, and Nur is also set to suit up for the City Reapers in Overtime Elite alongside other CIA Bella Vista players.

Inside the Loud House recently reported that Nur was essentially the last major target on Syracuse’s board for the 2027 cycle, though recruiting can always shift quickly.

Even without Nur, the Orange still has a strong two-player class in place. In late September, five-star wing/small forward Moussa Kamissoko committed to Syracuse after his official visit earlier in the month. The 6-foot-8, 180-pound Bronx native is ranked No. 7 nationally in the senior cycle by Rivals, and Syracuse’s staff has been at several of his open gyms since the fall recruiting period began.

Kamissoko will spend his senior year at Spire Academy in Geneva, Ohio, which recently joined a new 11-team international league called ATLAS. Several Syracuse five-star targets are also slated to compete in that league.

The other member of the class is Albany native Jack Donohue, a three-star wing at The Newman School in Boston. Donohue committed to Syracuse in early August after taking an unofficial visit in late June, and he plans to return for an official visit sometime in the coming months.

Assistant coach Arinze Onuaku was recently at a Newman open gym to watch Donohue, who scouts and analysts believe could rise to four-star status after a strong senior season. Donohue missed 10 months last year while recovering from open-heart surgery.

With Nur off the board, Syracuse’s 2027 class sits inside the top 25 nationally on both the 247Sports and Rivals websites. That’s a notable spot for a class that was expected to stay small, especially with the Orange already carrying 15 players on its current roster and continuing to lean heavily on the transfer portal and international recruiting.

Syracuse Gets An Early Rivalry Test Fans Have Missed For Years

After years without seeing one another on the floor, Syracuse and UConn are finally set to meet again Tuesday night in an exhibition at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. It is the first matchup between the longtime rivals since 2018, and while it will not count in the all-time series, it still offers a familiar jolt of interest for two fan bases that know the history well.

For both programs, the game is more than a nostalgic nod to an old Big East feel. It gives the coaching staffs a chance to sort through rotations, evaluate new pieces and get a better read on lineups before the regular season begins, all against an opponent that can quickly expose what still needs work. Syracuses Lone Freshman Could Force His Way Into A Bigger Role

Ryan Moeschs path to Syracuse has already been a little unusual, and that is part of what makes him one of the more interesting pieces on this roster. A four-star prospect from Central New York, he first committed to Siena before following coach Gerry McNamara to Syracuse, a move that gave him a chance to stay close to home while joining a program he grew up around. For Moesch, the chance to wear Syracuse on his chest carries a hometown pride that goes well beyond the usual freshman storyline.

He is expected to open the season as a backup guard, which makes his early role fairly clear even if his long-term one is not. Freshmen do not often arrive with a direct path to meaningful minutes, especially in a rotation where the staff will want reliability from the outset, but Moesch has the kind of local connection and recruiting pedigree that can keep him in the conversation if he proves ready. How much he plays may be decided over time, and that gives Syracuse one of its more intriguing subplots as the season unfolds. [Read more 🡒]

Syracuses Early KenPom Outlook Puts Gerry McNamara On The Spot

KenPoms preseason ratings for the 2026-27 college basketball season give Syracuse a modest early lift, slotting the Orange at No. 80 overall after a rough recent stretch. It is an improvement from where the program finished last season, and it comes as the school turns the page from Adrian Autry and hands the job to Gerry McNamara, whose first order of business is to steady a program that still has plenty to prove.

The ACC picture does not make that task any easier, either. Syracuse opens at No. 14 in the conference in KenPoms preseason view, which leaves little margin for error once league play arrives. McNamara inherits a team that at least starts from a better statistical place than a year ago, but the broader question is whether that modest bump translates into something more meaningful by the end of the season.
