UConn wide receiver Javon Brown is out of the hospital and back with the team after a frightening injury in Saturday’s 42-41 overtime loss to Syracuse.
UConn coach Jason Candle said Brown is “doing well” and added that the receiver’s neurological tests came back “good.” Candle also said Brown is walking and no longer hospitalized, though he noted there are still some unknowns with Brown’s diagnosis.
“Happy to report that Javon Brown is with us, back here, doing well,” Candle said. “Obviously a nasty hit and a tough situation on that play right there. He’s back with us, back to normal protocol and getting back to being healthy, and neurological stuff was good.”
Brown was stretchered off the field after the hit. He was alert, but he was placed in a neck brace and did not show obvious movement as he was carted away.
The injury happened when Brown got tangled up with Nazir Ward in the back of the Syracuse end zone. His arm ended up trapped under his body, and it appeared he couldn’t brace himself before landing hard on his head and neck.
CBS Sports Network reported that Brown was taken from the field to the hospital.
The scene drew a strong response from both teams. UConn players knelt in support of their teammate, and after a short pause, Syracuse players came over from the sideline to pray with them.
Brown’s connection to Syracuse added another layer to the moment. He transferred there from Toledo, where he played with Syracuse players Chris D’Appolonia and Amare Snowden.

Gerry McNamaras Syracuse Plan Hinges On One Early Test
Syracuse enters the season with a fresh set of questions, and Gerry McNamaras first roster build is drawing plenty of attention for the right reasons. Seth Greenberg pointed to culture, retention and upside as the basics that can give the Orange a chance, while also noting how important the Siena transfers McNamara brought with him could be in helping steady the program early.
The real early test, though, comes down to whether that mix can take hold quickly enough to matter in ACC play. Greenberg also flagged the potential growth of young players such as Sadiq White, Kiyan Anthony and Mark Morano Mahmutovic, and if Syracuse is going to make McNamaras plan work, those developments may need to show up sooner rather than later. Syracuse Gets Another Chance To Prove Oddsmakers Wrong
Syracuse heads into this weekend with another modest line attached to it, listed as 6.5-point underdogs by FanDuel against Virginia. The setup is familiar for a team that has already shown it can make a number look shaky, most recently by pulling out an overtime win against an opponent with Amari Odom starting in place of Steve Angeli.
Virginia comes in at 3-2 and is trying to bounce back from a loss to Florida State, so there is enough on paper to suggest a competitive game. For Syracuse, though, the bigger question is whether it can again turn skepticism into leverage and give oddsmakers another reason to rethink where this group belongs. [Read more 🡒]
Syracuse Faces A Rivalry Test That Could Shape Gerry McNamaras Start
The Syracuse mens basketball calendar already has a few familiar checkpoints, but the one that stands out the most in 2026 is a trip to Madison Square Garden on Nov. 15 to face St. Johns. For a rivalry that has long carried extra weight in New York hoops, this is the kind of non-conference game that can feel bigger than the date on the schedule. It also arrives at a time when Syracuse is still trying to build momentum under Gerry McNamara, making the matchup more than just another early-season test.
For Syracuse, the stakes go beyond bragging rights. A game like this can shape the way the Orange are viewed in the NCAA Tournament conversation, especially if they need rsum wins against high-level opponents away from home. It also matters on the recruiting front, where any edge in New York State can carry real value, and a strong showing against St. Johns would give Syracuse an important marker in what already looks like its most significant non-conference game of the season.
