Syracuse Suddenly Has A Quarterback Problem At The Worst Time

Syracuse faces a challenging matchup against UNC as key injuries loom large, threatening to extend their ACC losing streak.

Syracuse’s quarterback situation has gone from thin to stripped down heading into Saturday night at North Carolina.

The Orange will be without Amari Odom and Malachi Nelson for the 7:30 p.m. ET matchup, while Steve Angeli is listed as questionable. That leaves the door open for fourth-string quarterback Danny Lauter to potentially get the start under the lights.

It’s a brutal setup for a Syracuse team that is still searching for its first ACC win. The Orange are 2-4 overall and have dropped 11 straight conference games dating back to last season.

Angeli opened the season as the starter after transferring from Notre Dame in 2025. He helped Syracuse jump to a 3-1 record, but that stretch ended when he tore his Achilles at the end of the fourth game. He missed the rest of the season, and the Orange lost all eight of those games to finish 3-9.

He returned to start 2026 and was part of Syracuse’s 66-3 blowout of New Hampshire in the opener, but the season turned quickly after that. The Orange fell to Cal 21-18 and then to Pittsburgh 27-13, and Angeli struggled in both losses with five interceptions combined.

He also seemed to be dealing with physical discomfort in those games. A PRP injection for his Achilles has kept him out since then, and while he may have been benched for performance as well, the injection formally removed him from action.

Odom was brought in by Fran Brown after last season’s quarterback issues to give Syracuse more depth at the position. The Kennesaw State transfer brought a bit more dual-threat ability than Angeli, and he earned the start in Syracuse’s Week 5 win over UConn.

In that overtime victory, he accounted for six total touchdowns and delivered the game-winning two-point conversion. But he hurt his shoulder in that game and has not played since.

Brown suggested something could be torn.

Nelson was the other transfer addition, coming in after a year at UTEP. The former No. 1 recruit in the country had also spent time at USC and Boise State.

With Odom out, Nelson started the last two games, both close losses to Virginia and Louisville. He helped Syracuse build strong first-half leads in each, but the offense faded after halftime.

Now the Orange head to Chapel Hill with the quarterback room in rough shape and the pressure of a long ACC skid hanging over them.

Fran Brown's Future Suddenly Feels Like Syracuse's Biggest Story

Syracuses rough 2026 start has pushed Fran Browns long-term future into the spotlight at a time when the season is already slipping away. The Orange are 2-4 overall and still winless in ACC play, which leaves them buried at the bottom of the conference standings and searching for answers after a run of injuries and close losses has kept the offense and defense from finding any rhythm.

Bruce Feldmans assessment only added to the unease around the program, pointing to Browns job security as something that could hinge on how the rest of the year plays out under new athletic director Bryan Blair. Brown earned plenty of goodwill with his debut in 2024, but Syracuse now faces a much different conversation, one where the momentum of that first season has faded and the pressure to stabilize the program is suddenly impossible to ignore. Syracuse Heads To UNC With A Quarterback Problem It Cant Ignore

Syracuse is headed to North Carolina carrying a quarterback situation it can no longer treat as background noise. Amari Odom and Malachi Nelson are out for the game because of injuries, while Steve Angeli is listed as questionable for the third straight week, leaving the Orange to sort through a thin and unsettled depth chart at the most important position on the field.

If Angeli is unable to go, Georgetown transfer Danny Lauter is expected to get the start, a development that would put even more pressure on Syracuses offensive plans in a tricky road setting. The Orange are also monitoring linebacker Antoine Deslauriers and kicker Tripp Woody, both listed as questionable, so the injury report could shape more than just the quarterback decision by the time kickoff arrives. Syracuse Faces A Brutal ACC Question Heading Into UNC

Syracuse is heading into another ACC test still searching for its first conference win in more than a year, and the timing could hardly be tougher. The Orange are 0-4 in league play and have dropped 11 straight conference games, even as there have been a few encouraging signs along the way, including a steadier defensive showing and a growing connection between quarterback Malachi Nelson and receiver Umari Hatcher in the loss to Louisville.

North Carolina is next, which only sharpens the question of whether Syracuse can finally turn those flashes into something lasting. The matchup has already drawn different predictions from beat writers, and the reasons are easy to see: Syracuse has been dealing with injuries and turnovers, two problems that can quickly erase any progress from one week to the next.
