After nearly nine months of waiting, Syracuse still hasn’t said when Art Monk will finally get his day.
The school had planned to honor the former Syracuse wide receiver last season, but that ceremony never happened. Now the Orange have their 2026 home schedule set, and there’s still no announcement on when - or even if - Monk will be recognized during the upcoming season.
Syracuse opens its home slate on Sept. 5 against New Hampshire at noon ET. The rest of the home schedule includes Oct. 17 against Louisville, Oct. 31 against SMU, Nov. 7 against Clemson and Nov. 28 against Notre Dame, with the other kickoff times still to be determined.
If Syracuse does choose a date for Monk’s ceremony, the Notre Dame game looks like the most likely spot. The Fighting Irish are projected to be one of the top teams in the country, and that late-November matchup should draw the biggest crowd at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Monk’s resume at Syracuse is hard to miss. He was a 1979 All-American, finished sixth on the school’s career receptions list with 102 catches, ranked seventh in career receiving yards with 1,644 and still owns the Orange record for most receptions in a game. He also added 254 carries for 1,174 yards on the ground.
After his college career, Monk went on to play 15 seasons in the NFL, won three Super Bowls with Washington and earned spots in both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
The university first announced in July 2025 that Monk’s No. 45 would be retired on Nov. 25. Then in November 2025, Syracuse said the ceremony would be pushed to 2026 because of a "unforeseen scheduling conflict".
There’s another layer to the decision now, too. Syracuse has a new athletic director in Byran Blair, and he’s expected to be the one making the call in the coming months.
For now, though, the question remains unanswered: when will Syracuse football actually honor Art Monk?

Syracuse Camp Has Already Raised One Big Concern Up Front
Syracuse is closing out its first week of preseason camp with the 2026 opener still a few weeks away, and Fran Brown has already started sorting through the early tone of the fall. The head coach met with reporters to offer a progress update, and there has been enough on-field work to get a better sense of where the Orange stand as they build toward the Sept. 5 game against New Hampshire.
The biggest concern so far has come on the injury front, where several players have already been nicked up in camp. Sophomore offensive lineman D'Joni Scatliffe is the most notable name in that group, leaving the Orange to adjust up front while the staff waits for more clarity on how the rest of the line holds up over the coming weeks. Syracuses Defensive Line Rebuild Will Define Fran Browns Next Step
Syracuse spent much of the offseason trying to answer the same question its 2025 defense raised all fall: how quickly can the defensive front be fixed? The issues up front helped drive a coaching shakeup, including the arrival of John Scott Jr. as defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator, and the roster work followed. The Orange brought in multiple defensive linemen through the transfer portal and added more help through recruiting, all with an eye toward giving the unit more size, depth and impact than it had a year ago.
What makes the rebuild so important is that Syracuse is not starting from scratch. Rashard Perry and Isaiah Hastings remain part of the plan, giving the staff some returning pieces to build around while the newcomers settle in. The challenge now is turning that mix of experience and fresh arrivals into a group that can hold up over a full season, because for Fran Browns next step, the answer on the defensive line may say as much as anything else about where the program is headed.
