Syracuse football is set to host one of its highest-rated 2027 commitments for a game-day visit this fall.
Jalen Welch, a four-star safety from Georgia and one of the top verbal pledges in the Orange’s 2027 class, will take an unofficial visit to Syracuse when the team faces SMU on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the JMA Wireless Dome, Inside the Loud House has learned.
Welch, listed at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, committed to Syracuse on June 16 after taking an official visit to the program a few days earlier. The Georgia product plays for Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., near Atlanta, one of the country’s better-known prep programs.
Grayson finished 12-1 last season, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Georgia High School Association Class 6A state playoffs and was ranked No. 13 nationally by MaxPreps. Welch’s junior-year line included 19 solo tackles, 36 total tackles, 4.0 tackles for a loss, two interceptions and five pass breakups, according to MaxPreps.
For the 2026 season, when Welch will be a senior, Grayson is currently ranked No. 13 in MaxPreps’ preseason top 25.
Welch’s visit gives Syracuse another chance to keep one of its premier 2027 defenders close to the program on a game day. He is one of at least three Orange commitments in the class who have earned four-star status from at least one recruiting service, alongside running back Elijah Kimble of New York and wide receiver Chanin Harris of South Carolina. Kimble, who plays at Buffalo, is also scheduled to make two game-day visits to Syracuse this fall, including for the SMU game.
In the 2027 cycle, the Rivals Industry Ranking has Welch at No. 365 overall, No. 34 among safeties and No. 39 in Georgia. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite places him at No. 412 nationally, No. 38 at safety and No. 46 in Georgia. ESPN, 247Sports and Rivals all rank him inside the top 40 at his position for the class.
Syracuse also added two more 2027 commitments over the weekend, bringing its total in the class to 26. The newest pledges are three-star athlete Amari Eliano of Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio, and defensive lineman Chima Okechukwu of Mt. Zion Preparatory Academy in Lanham, Md.
At the time of this writing, Syracuse’s 2027 class was ranked No. 39 overall by 247Sports and No. 45 nationally by Rivals.
