Syracuse Pressure Is Rising As Fran Brown Fights One Growing Problem

Syracuse football's battle with a persistent ACC losing streak tests the resolve of Coach Fran Brown and Athletic Director Bryan Blair, as they seek a turnaround with a promising yet challenging roster.

Perception has turned into the problem for Syracuse football, and the numbers behind it are getting hard to ignore.

The Orange have now dropped 11 straight ACC games, and that slide has Brown trying to steer the program through a stretch that no one around Syracuse wants to be part of. The next chance to stop the bleeding comes Saturday night, when Syracuse visits North Carolina at 7:30 p.m.

ET on ACC Network. The Tar Heels are coming off a 24-20 rivalry win over Duke that pushed them to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Bill Belichick’s second season.

The losing streak has already dragged Syracuse into uncomfortable territory. The program lost 12 straight Big East games at its low point under Greg Robinson during the first two of his four seasons from 2005-08. Syracuse is now sitting on 11 consecutive ACC defeats dating back to the Clemson road game on Sept. 20, 2025, along with 12 straight losses against Power Four teams, including the 70-7 defeat to Notre Dame.

Brown has tried to keep his focus on the bigger job in front of him, even as frustration builds from the outside. One part of that is his relationship with athletic director Bryan Blair, who has been on the job only seven months with Brown. Blair and Brown spent time together after the Louisville loss, breaking down what went wrong.

“It’s pretty good, we speak every week, have lunch together,” Brown said when asked about how the two are plotting a course to get the program out of the conference cellar. “I’m speaking with him, talking after the game. He knew it was a tough game, he is a good athletic director.

”(He) was like, ‘come over and talk to me, are you alright, Fran? I am seeing the progress and things of that nature.” (Which by the way, the comment “things of that nature” has turned into Coach Fran’s pet phrase.)

Brown also pointed to freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell III, who drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in last week’s loss to Louisville after tossing the ball into the west end zone lower deck following his first collegiate touchdown. Russell has been working his way into the offense after his delayed debut at Connecticut on Oct. 3, and in three games he has eight catches for 64 yards and that one score.

“In think Calvin Russell’s the leader, he’s a guy that wants to see everybody on the team do well just as if he were a coach,” Brown said Monday, “If you saw when he scored, the entire team was excited about it because he is always happy about them, everyday, from the smallest things they do in practice.”

Syracuse has shown flashes in recent weeks, holding halftime leads at Connecticut and Virginia and trailing Louisville by only five, but the Orange still have not found a way to finish. Brown said the issue runs through everyone involved.

“We need our playmakers to make more plays, our coaches to make more of the right calls, and myself to make the right (time management) calls,” Brown explained. “It’s an organizational thing, we all have to step up”.

Kiyan Anthony's Early Syracuse Role Just Became A Real Question

Kiyan Anthonys first preseason look for Syracuse didnt last long, but it did serve as an early reminder that the Orange are still in evaluation mode. Anthony logged just eight minutes in the teams opening exhibition, even as he and Sadiq White Jr. are viewed as core returning pieces with the kind of experience Syracuse wants to lean on this season.

For now, the staff appears intent on using the preseason to sort through the new faces and figure out how the rotation should take shape. Anthony will get another chance to push his case in the next preseason game against Niagara, and his role there may say plenty about how quickly Syracuse wants to ramp him back into the mix. Syracuse Fans Have Two Big Reasons To Watch This Exhibition

Syracuses exhibition against Siena at MVP Arena offers an early look at how Gerry McNamaras team is taking shape, and it comes with a few added layers for Orange fans. Freshman Mark Morano is set to make his Syracuse debut, giving the program its first public glimpse of a newcomer who could factor into the rotation as the season gets underway.

The matchup also brings McNamara against his former school, with Siena now coached by Nevada Smith. Syracuse, meanwhile, will be without Aiden Tobiason because of injury, which slightly alters the mix for a game that is more about evaluation than the final score, but still carries enough storylines to make it worth following closely. Syracuse Heads Into UNC Week With A Quarterback Problem Again

Syracuse is heading into its North Carolina prep with the quarterback picture once again up in the air, a frustrating familiar spot for a team trying to steady itself late in the season. Fran Brown gave the latest health update on Malachi Nelson, Steve Angeli and Amari Odom, and the uncertainty at the most important position leaves the Orange trying to piece together a plan while the weeks work begins.

Brown also said wide receiver Elijah Moore is being moved to safety, another sign that Syracuse is searching for answers wherever it can find them. There was at least one encouraging note on the injury front, with linebacker Antoine Deslauriers expected to practice after missing the previous game, but the bigger question still hangs over the offense as the Orange get ready for a trip into ACC play without a confirmed starter under center.
