Syracuse Orange's New AD Bryan Blair Aims to Transform the Future

Bryan Blair steps in as Syracuse's new athletic director with a bold vision to modernize and rejuvenate the program, drawing on proven fundraising acumen and a fresh approach to leadership.

Syracuse, N.Y. - A New Era Begins for Syracuse Athletics

The Syracuse Orange community welcomed a bold new voice with the introduction of Bryan Blair as the 12th athletic director. Blair's message was unmistakable: it's time to move forward and embrace change.

Blair, addressing Syracuse University and the Central New York community, underscored the importance of modernizing the athletic department, with a keen focus on revenue generation and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. "We need to modernize our enterprise," Blair emphasized, highlighting the necessity of attracting talented student-athletes to drive competitiveness and financial growth.

This approach has resonated with fans, especially amidst concerns about the current financial resources available to Syracuse athletics. Blair's focus on fundraising and NIL was pivotal in his selection, as noted by Chancellor-elect Mike Haynie. "We need an athletic director who will shape the moment," Haynie stated, expressing confidence in Blair's ability to lead.

Blair's track record extends beyond financial acumen. His tenure at Toledo showcased success on the field and in academics, alongside strong community support for athletics. Blair's commitment to family values also aligns with Syracuse's recent coaching hires, as he expressed gratitude to his family during his introduction.

Timing was crucial for this hire, following the retirement of former AD John Wildhack and the departure of men’s basketball coach Adrian Autry. Although ideally, the appointment would have occurred over the summer, the urgency of recent events necessitated swift action. Blair was announced as AD just nine days after Haynie's appointment as Chancellor-elect.

Blair’s fundraising prowess is evident from his tenure at Toledo, where he increased fundraising by 282% since 2022. This expertise is vital for Syracuse, as financial competitiveness within the ACC and Power Four conferences remains a priority.

Blair is ready to engage with the community to elevate Syracuse's financial standing. "We want to provide a clear, compelling vision that gets people excited," he said, aiming to inspire bold contributions.

His experience at smaller schools has honed his strategic skills, which he plans to leverage at Syracuse. "We had to outmaneuver and out-strategize our opponents many times," Blair noted, expressing a desire to shift Syracuse into a more favorable competitive position.

Ultimately, Blair's goals converge on revitalizing Syracuse's winning tradition. His immediate task is hiring a new men’s basketball coach, working with the preliminary list of candidates started by Wildhack.

Blair, a history major and former defensive lineman at Wofford College, believes in the power of history to shape the future. He aims to awaken the storied legacy of Syracuse's Block "S," with a clear intention to restore its former glory.

"We want to wake the sleeping beast," Blair declared, signaling a new chapter for Syracuse athletics.
