Syracuse Orange Faces Major Shakeup as Coach Autry Plans for 2026-27

As Syracuse men's basketball gears up for major changes, the focus sharpens on strategically retaining key players to bolster the teams future under new leadership.

The Syracuse Orange men's basketball team is gearing up for a significant transformation in the 2026-27 season. Just a day after wrapping up their regular season, major changes are already underway off the court.

Coach Adrian Autry and GM Alex Kline are officially out, with reports suggesting the rest of the coaching staff might follow. The big question now is: who will step up to lead the program? And once the head coach is in place, who will fill the GM and assistant coaching roles?

Turning our attention to the players, the focus shifts to which talents Syracuse should retain from the 2025-26 roster and what that means for the offseason strategy.

A key player in this mix is Nate Kingz. Although he's technically out of eligibility, there's buzz about his interest in returning.

Kingz, along with his agent and Kline, has been working on an NCAA eligibility waiver to reclaim a year spent at a community college. If successful, Kingz could be a cornerstone for the team, easily the best returning two-way player on paper.

In the 2025-26 season, Kingz took on the toughest perimeter assignments while stepping up as a lead scorer in several games. His standout performance against SMU, where he scored 25 points, highlighted his potential impact.

Tyler Betsey is another player worth keeping if he's utilized correctly. His offensive game was inconsistent, but he posted career highs in three-point shooting efficiency and volume.

Betsey’s ability to shoot from the forward position is a valuable asset in today’s game. He could thrive as a "sixth starter," coming off the bench or closing games, provided he's not relied upon as a primary offensive creator.

Donnie Freeman presents a more complex decision. There's potential for a new coach to unlock his skills better than Autry did.

Despite some regression and injuries, Freeman still earned All-ACC honorable mention. If he can stay healthy and improve his consistency, he could be a significant asset.

However, concerns about his defensive consistency and reliance on mid-range jumpers remain.

Naithan George also had an up-and-down season. Despite solid stats in assists, steals, and free throw percentage, expectations were higher for the experienced point guard.

His future might depend on whether a new coach values his experience or opts for a fresh face at the point guard position. This decision could also impact Akir Souare, an athletic forward who has played alongside George.

Among the younger players, Kiyan Anthony is one to watch. While he showed flashes of offensive potential, his shooting percentages were low, and he struggled defensively. With the right coaching, there's room for his game to grow significantly.

Sadiq White Jr. is a freshman who should definitely return. His athleticism, defensive versatility, and ability to guard multiple positions make him a valuable piece for the future.

Lastly, Luke Fennell and Aaron Womack, who saw limited action this season, deserve a chance to earn more playing time. As bigger guards, they could bolster the team's depth and allow Syracuse to focus their offseason resources elsewhere.

As the Orange navigate this period of change, the decisions made in the coming months will shape the team's trajectory for years to come.
