Syracuse Made An Early Impression On A Quarterback Fans Should Watch

Promising QB prospect Zymere Weaver shares his positive impressions of Syracuse University after an eventful game day visit, sparking interest in a potential future with the Orange.

2028 quarterback Zymere Weaver got his first real taste of Syracuse on a game day this past weekend, and the Orange made a strong impression while knocking off No. 19 SMU, 30-27, at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Weaver had been on campus before, including for spring practice in March, but this trip gave him something different: a chance to see the place packed and buzzing during a live game. Syracuse’s win was its first over a ranked opponent since 2024, and Weaver came away with plenty to like.

“The visit was great,” Weaver said to The Juice Online. "I can see myself playing there one day for sure.

Great win, much needed. The atmosphere was great seeing all the fans out supporting.”

What stood out most to him was the way Syracuse handled the game. The Orange forced two turnovers and protected the ball throughout the day, and Weaver said that showed up in the way they played.

"I feel like Cuse played with discipline, toughness and violence,” Weaver said. “My favorite part of the trip was just there watching the two teams go at each other. I love watching football and the game today against SMU was a great one to watch."

He also came away impressed with quarterback Steve Angeli, who went 21 of 34 for 200 yards and a touchdown while adding another score on the ground.

"I think Angeli played well,” Weaver said. “Poised in the pocket, delivering on time.

He had a great rushing touchdown to set the tone. You gotta love it.

I’ll definitely say he’s one of the better QBs in country, so keep watching.”

Weaver also spent time with Syracuse coaches Fran Brown, Sean Ryan and Mike Gillespie. He said the conversations were good, even if the visit was more game-focused than talk-heavy.

“All great guys,” Weaver said. “Good speaking to them again.

They asked me how the season was going, and talked a little bit about my midseason film. This visit was a little different less time to really talk to the coaches because they were locked in on the main goal, but you understand why.”

The Edison (NJ) St. Thomas Aquinas quarterback has helped his team to a 6-3 record heading into the playoffs, and he says he’s embracing the role of a leader with an edge.

“The type of QB I am is a playmaker,” Weaver said. “You need a good pass, I can do it you.

Need a good run, I can do it. You need a heads up play, I can do it.

Overall just a smart football player that you can rely at anytime to make the play.”

Clemsons Injury Trouble Could Change Everything For Syracuse Saturday

Syracuses matchup with Clemson took on a different look after Dabo Swinney said several Tigers starters were injured in the loss to Florida State and are expected to miss Saturdays game in the Dome. Among the players sidelined are running back Gideon Davidson, left guard Elyjah Thurmon, center Harris Sewell and linebacker Kobe McCloud, a cluster of absences that hits both the offensive line and the defensive front of one of the ACCs most physical teams.

For Syracuse, the timing matters. Clemson is already turning to backup players to fill those spots, and the Orange now get a chance to test a reshuffled opponent in a game that could carry real weight in the conference race. The injuries do not guarantee anything, but they do change the margin for error and add another layer of intrigue to a matchup that had already been important. [Read more 🡒]

Syracuse Bowl Hopes Are Back With One Big December Question

Syracuse has put itself back in the bowl conversation, but the margin for error is still thin. With four games left, the Orange need two more wins to reach bowl eligibility, and that has kept the seasons late stretch meaningful even as different outlets have started mapping out possible December destinations.

The projections have been all over the place, with some sending Syracuse to the San Juan Bowl against Marshall or Georgia Southern, others linking the Orange to the Gasparilla Bowl against Minnesota or the Birmingham Bowl against Auburn. Still, there is no consensus, and some analysts are not projecting a bowl trip at all, which leaves the final month with plenty riding on how Syracuse closes. [Read more 🡒]

Syracuses New Rotation Gave Orange Fans Plenty To Like Early

Syracuses first look at a new rotation against New Haven offered plenty for Orange fans to take in, and most of it came on the kind of night coaches like to see early in the season. The Orange grabbed control quickly, kept the Chargers at arms length throughout, and got meaningful contributions from Gavin Doty, Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White Jr. while also winning the battle on the glass and turning defense into extra possessions.

For Gerry McNamara, the halftime interview centered on the shooting, which is often the first thing to settle when a team is still sorting out roles and rhythm. Even with Syracuse in command, there was still a sense that this group was showing only part of what it can become, and that makes the early returns on the new rotation worth watching as the schedule starts to tighten.
