Syracuse Loses Three-Star Recruit as He Reconsiders New Opportunities

As a wave of new offers rolls in, a rising Florida prospect reconsiders his early pledge, leaving Syracuse to reassess its momentum in a pivotal recruiting cycle.

Syracuse Loses 2027 Commit Davion Crumitie as Recruitment Battle Heats Up

Syracuse football just took a hit to its highly touted 2027 recruiting class. Davion Crumitie, a versatile three-star athlete out of Rickards High School in Florida, has officially decommitted from the Orange and reopened his recruitment.

Crumitie had been on board with Syracuse since September, but as he told Rivals, this wasn’t a snap decision. “I’ve been thinking about it for a while,” he said.

“The reason I decommitted was just wanting to open back up and look at all of my options. I want to see different places.”

And the options are certainly rolling in.

Just this week, Crumitie announced new offers from Virginia Tech and West Virginia. That’s on top of a growing list that includes Wisconsin, Boston College, Kentucky, Kansas State, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Kansas, and Miami (Ohio). Since backing off his Syracuse pledge, he’s become one of the hotter names in the 2027 cycle, and plenty of Power Five programs are stepping up their interest.

Right now, Crumitie says Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Kansas State, Kansas, Mississippi State, Wake Forest, Maryland, and UCF are recruiting him the hardest.

Still, Crumitie made it clear that his decision to decommit wasn’t about a lack of respect for Syracuse or new head coach Fran Brown. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

“(Fran) Brown is one of the best in college football and I have all love for him,” Crumitie said. “But I want to find the best spot for me.”

That’s a mature, measured approach from a high school athlete who’s clearly thinking long-term. Crumitie has been used as both a wide receiver and defensive back at Rickards - a versatile, two-way talent in the mold of Demetres Samuel Jr. - and that kind of flexibility is going to make him even more appealing to programs looking to build depth on both sides of the ball.

For Syracuse, the timing isn’t ideal, but it’s not catastrophic either. The Orange are now down to nine commitments in their 2027 class, but they still hold the No. 5 overall ranking in the country and sit atop the ACC, according to 247Sports.

That’s a testament to the recruiting momentum Fran Brown has generated since taking over. Syracuse just wrapped up back-to-back weekends of junior day visits, continuing to build on what’s already shaping up to be the most talented group in program history. The 2026 class already holds that distinction, and the Orange are clearly aiming to keep that bar high moving forward.

Losing a Florida athlete like Crumitie - especially one with his athleticism and upside - stings. But in today’s recruiting landscape, decommitments are part of the process, not the end of it. For Syracuse, the focus now shifts to keeping the rest of the class intact and finding the next rising star ready to buy into Brown’s vision.

As for Crumitie, his recruitment is officially wide open - and it looks like he’s just getting started.
