Syracuse Just Made A Strong Impression On A Top New York Target

Syracuse is making a strong case for top NY athlete Anthony Lucas, who leaves his latest visit dazzled and deliberating.

Syracuse made a strong impression on 2029 Rochester (NY) East athlete Anthony Lucas when he was on campus to watch the Orange beat No. 19 SMU, 30-27.

Lucas, who was first offered by Syracuse nearly two years ago, said the trip lived up to the hype.

“The visit was amazing,” Lucas said to The Juice Online. “I got to experience the team come out play together and win in a tough game.”

He spent time catching up with several Syracuse coaches, including Tommy Caporale, Deon Maddox and Fran Brown.

“It was mostly just us catching up and talking about the season,” Lucas said.

What stood out most to Lucas was the way Syracuse started fast and then fought back to finish the job.

“Cuse came out firing, bringing the energy scoring and getting stops,” Lucas said. “To see them be able to come back and win trailing the Mustangs was inspiring.”

He also said his favorite moment was being part of the crowd after the upset win. In the Brown era, Syracuse is 3-0 at the JMA Wireless Dome against ranked opponents.

Lucas also got a photo with freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell, and said it was his first time seeing him play in person.

“It was my first time ever seeing him play in person,” Lucas said.

The Orange remain a major factor in Lucas’ recruitment, and he said Syracuse is in his top 2.

“Nothing changed (in my view of the Orange),” Lucas said. “Cuse brought the hospitality and the energy. It was just a blessing to be in a position where I could talk to these coaches and enjoy the game.”

Lucas previously said Brown delivered his offer personally and told him he wanted him to stay in New York and play for him.

“He told me that he wanted me to stay home in the state of New York and play for him,” Lucas said. “He also encouraged me to take all the visits and enjoy the recruiting process. He said if I continued to work hard and listen to my Uncle/Coach Diddi that I’ll be the No. 1 player in the state.”

East is coming off a playoff win, and Lucas said he wants more as November approaches. He plays both EDGE and wide receiver, and he says he sees himself like Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons on defense and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown in his rookie season on offense.

Said Lucas: “I like hitting, but I also like to score.”

Syracuse Win Still Left Gerry McNamara Wanting Much More

Syracuse opened the season with a pair of wins, including a lopsided 102-49 rout of Central Connecticut State, but the early results did not exactly leave Gerry McNamara feeling satisfied. The Orange got meaningful contributions from Mark Morano, Gavin Doty, Luke Wilson and Sadiq White Jr., and the scoreboard looked plenty convincing, yet McNamara made it clear the standard inside the program is higher than simply piling up victories in November.

For Syracuse, the frustration is rooted in process as much as outcome. McNamara wants stronger performances and sharper execution even while the wins are coming, a reminder that the first week of the season can reveal as much about a teams habits as its record does. The Orange have the results they wanted, but the coach is already pushing for more from a group that has shown flashes and still has plenty to clean up. [Read more 🡒]

Syracuse Is Pulling Out All The Stops For Clemson At The Dome

Bryan Blair has been working the social-media circuit to give Syracuse football a little extra juice at the Dome, and it is the kind of hands-on push that usually shows how much the school wants the place full. The athletic director has been engaging directly with fans, including responding to a suggestion about a beer promotion and rolling out a student ticket deal called Slime Bryan, all in the name of making game day feel more like an event.

The timing matters with Clemson coming to town, because Syracuse is clearly trying to turn attendance into a real homefield edge. Student turnout has long been part of that equation, and the Orange are leaning into anything that might help pack the building and create a louder setting when one of the ACCs biggest draws arrives at the Dome. Syracuse Faces A Much Bigger Clemson Test Than Fans Realize

Syracuse heads into its matchup with Clemson riding a little momentum, which is more than it could say a few weeks ago. The Orange have won two straight ACC games, and now they get a chance to measure themselves against one of the leagues standard-bearers at home, with Steve Angeli expected to start at quarterback as the offense tries to keep its recent progress going.

The quarterback picture is still a real concern, though, with Amari Odom out for the season because of a shoulder injury and Malachi Nelson doubtful after ankle surgery. Syracuse has beaten Clemson twice since 2017, so there is recent history to lean on, but the bigger picture is just as important: with four games left, the Orange still need two more wins to secure bowl eligibility, which gives this one a little extra weight beyond the usual ACC spotlight.
