Syracuse basketball has gotten on the board early with one of the more intriguing names in the 2028 class.
The Orange, under first-year head coach Gerry McNamara, are among a long list of high-major programs that have recently reached out to Enmanuel Valera Melo, a 6-foot-6 wing from the Dominican Republic who is rated a three-star prospect and sits inside the top 80 nationally, according to recruiting analysts.
The contact period for 2028 prospects opened on June 15, giving college staffs the green light to begin direct communication with rising high school juniors. Since then, McNamara and his assistants have been active across the class, with several of those prospects already landing Syracuse scholarship offers.
Valera Melo has drawn attention from Stanford, Northwestern, Marquette, Syracuse, Florida State, Mississippi State, Notre Dame and Illinois, according to analysts posting on X. His coach also told @Stockrisers that he had heard from Stanford, Northwestern, Marquette, Syracuse, Florida State, Mississippi State and Notre Dame.
He attends The Phelps School in Malvern, Pa., and this spring and summer he has been playing up a division for the 17U PSA Cardinals in Nike’s EYBL league, the Bronx-based program. One of his teammates there is 2027 five-star wing/small forward Moussa Kamissoko out of Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y., another player Syracuse is pursuing, according to analysts.
Valera Melo’s early offer list already includes Illinois, Mississippi State, TCU, La Salle, Manhattan, High Point and Wyoming, based on recruiting services and his Instagram page.
The interest makes sense when you look at what he brings. A December evaluation from NERRHoops described him as a player with “fluid scoring,” noting that he thrives as a shooter while also showing “some craftiness and handle in his bag that is intriguing.” At Phelps, he averaged 24.2 minutes, 7.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
For PSA Cardinals, his numbers this spring and summer have been 5.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest, with shooting splits of 37.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point range and 71.4 percent at the free-throw line.
In the 2028 class, the industry-generated 247Sports Composite ranks Valera Melo No. 81 overall, No. 29 among small forwards and No. 6 in Pennsylvania. The industry-generated Rivals Industry Ranking lists him No. 89 nationally, No. 20 at small forward and No. 6 in Pennsylvania, while Rivals has him at No. 79 overall in his cycle.
