Syracuse Is Suddenly In An Early Fight For An Elite Wing

Syracuse's new coaching staff eyes top talent with renewed interest, focusing on five-star standout Kevin Wheatley Jr. amidst intense recruitment competition.

Kevin Wheatley Jr. is making waves in the world of high school basketball, and it's no wonder why top-tier programs are lining up to catch his attention. As a five-star wing in the 2028 class, Wheatley has been a hot topic since the contact period opened on June 15. Syracuse basketball's new coaching staff, led by first-year head coach Gerry McNamara, is among those reaching out, showcasing their interest in this rising star.

Standing tall at 6-foot-7 and weighing in at 202 pounds, Wheatley's talent has not gone unnoticed. He's racked up scholarship offers from notable schools like Seton Hall, Utah, and Florida State.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Wheatley has also been in conversations with a slew of programs including Auburn, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Providence, BYU, VCU, UCF, Stanford, Texas, Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame.

Clearly, his skills on the court have caught the eye of many.

Ranked No. 23 overall in the 2028 cycle by the 247Sports Composite, Wheatley is no stranger to Syracuse. He made an unofficial visit last December when he received an offer from then-head coach Adrian Autry. Now, with McNamara at the helm, Syracuse continues to show keen interest in Wheatley's potential.

Hailing from Rahway, N.J., close to the bustling basketball scene of New York City, Wheatley has honed his skills at Our Saviour Lutheran High School in the Bronx and Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. For the upcoming 2026-27 season, he's set to play for the Masters Academy International in Stow, Massachusetts. Under the guidance of legendary coach Jason Smith, Masters Academy will participate in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Scholastic, a powerhouse conference in high school hoops.

Wheatley's prowess isn't just limited to his high school endeavors. On the AAU circuit, he's been a standout for the PSA Cardinals' 16U team in Nike’s EYBL league.

His stats are impressive, averaging 17.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. His shooting efficiency is equally remarkable, hitting 56.8 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three-point range, and 88.2 percent from the free-throw line.

But Wheatley's journey is a team effort, and several of his PSA Cardinals teammates are also drawing attention. This includes 2028 three-star power forward Damian Mojica, who plans to check out Syracuse soon, along with five-star point guard Malik Moore and guard/wing Kingsley Rogers. Together, they are a formidable group that has college scouts taking notice.

As the recruitment process heats up, Kevin Wheatley Jr. remains a player to watch. With his combination of size, skill, and scoring ability, he's poised to make a significant impact on whichever program he chooses to join. Keep an eye on this talented wing as he navigates the next steps of his basketball journey.

Syracuse Just Entered An Early Recruiting Battle Fans Need To Watch

Syracuses first-year staff under Gerry McNamara is already working the kind of early board that can shape a class years down the line, and one of the latest names to surface is a rising 2028 wing from The Phelps School in Pennsylvania. The Orange reached out as the contact period opened for high school juniors, putting themselves in the mix for a player who has quickly drawn attention from a range of high-major programs.

The competition is going to be real here, and that is what makes the pursuit worth watching. Recruiting analysts already view him as one of the better prospects in the country for his class, and Syracuse is now trying to establish itself early against programs with plenty of pull of their own. In a cycle this far out, the schools that get in first can matter, but they still have a lot of work to do from here. [Read more 🡒]

Another Local Syracuse Commit Is Fueling Fran Browns 2027 Momentum

Noah Collins-Howards June official visit to Syracuse gave the Orange another reminder of why the local recruiting pipeline has been such a useful part of Fran Browns push. The three-star wide receiver from Rush-Henrietta High School had already committed back in March, but the trip let him spend more time around the staff and future teammates and keep building on the connection that helped bring one of New Yorks top prospects into the fold.

Collins-Howard is ranked as the No. 9 overall prospect in the state and is part of a 2027 class that keeps getting bigger by the week. Syracuse has now landed 22 commitments, and the Orange have been especially active in June as Brown continues to stack pledges and reinforce the culture that has made local recruits comfortable staying close to home. Syracuses New 7-Footer Could Change Everything On Defense

Abdramane Sibys path to Syracuse has already been unusual before he ever steps into a college game. The 7-foot prospect from Mali went from there to Italy at 13, later spent time in Serbia, and now arrives in Central New York with the kind of frame and defensive profile that can change how a team plays around the rim.

Syracuse coach Gerry McNamara has made it clear the Orange needed more shot-altering ability, and Siby fits that need with his length, athleticism and defensive instincts. Scout Jonathan Givony has also been high on the pickup, and the next question for Syracuse is how quickly Siby can turn that promise into a reliable interior presence. [Read more 🡒]
