Syracuse’s recruiting footprint in Florida is getting another look this fall, and this time the Orange will host one of the state’s more heavily pursued young defensive linemen.
Antonio Wilcher, a 2028 three-star defensive lineman from Miami Southridge Senior High School, is set for a game-day visit to Syracuse on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Orange open their 2026 season against New Hampshire at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The 6-foot-3, 305-pound prospect has been on Syracuse’s radar for a while. The Orange first offered him a scholarship in January 2025, and he was back on campus for an unofficial visit in April during spring practice. Wilcher later posted that he “Had a Great time at the university of syracuse!!”
Florida has been a major recruiting lane for Fran Brown and general manager Tommy Caporale, and Wilcher fits right into that pipeline. He’ll be a junior this coming season, and Miami Southridge has already shown it can play deep into the year. Last season, the Spartans finished 11-2 and reached the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 6A regional final.
Wilcher’s sophomore production reflected a player already making noise in the trenches. Per MaxPreps, he finished with 27 solo tackles, 33 total tackles, three tackles for a loss, one sack, one interception and two pass breakups.
The offer sheet tells the rest of the story. According to 247Sports, Wilcher has close to 40 scholarship offers, with programs such as Auburn, California, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M, Wake Forest and West Virginia all involved.
Syracuse is very much in the mix. Wilcher stays in regular contact with Caporale and the Orange staff, and schools currently high on his list include Syracuse, Miami, Oregon, Louisville, Missouri, Florida, Texas A&M and Florida State, according to Inside the Loud House.
The attention around him isn’t limited to Syracuse’s board, either. A February post noted that Miami Southridge’s underclassmen defensive line group has combined for more than 60 FBS offers, with Wilcher part of that trio.
As for his national standing, Wilcher is listed in the 2028 class at No. 523 overall, No. 58 among defensive linemen and No. 67 in Florida. Another ranking places him at No. 550 nationally, No. 56 at defensive lineman and No. 71 in the Sunshine State.

Syracuse is closing out its first week of preseason camp with the 2026 opener still a few weeks away, and Fran Brown has already started sorting through the early tone of the fall. The head coach met with reporters to offer a progress update, and there has been enough on-field work to get a better sense of where the Orange stand as they build toward the Sept. 5 game against New Hampshire.
The biggest concern so far has come on the injury front, where several players have already been nicked up in camp. Sophomore offensive lineman D'Joni Scatliffe is the most notable name in that group, leaving the Orange to adjust up front while the staff waits for more clarity on how the rest of the line holds up over the coming weeks. Syracuses Defensive Line Rebuild Will Define Fran Browns Next Step
Syracuse spent much of the offseason trying to answer the same question its 2025 defense raised all fall: how quickly can the defensive front be fixed? The issues up front helped drive a coaching shakeup, including the arrival of John Scott Jr. as defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator, and the roster work followed. The Orange brought in multiple defensive linemen through the transfer portal and added more help through recruiting, all with an eye toward giving the unit more size, depth and impact than it had a year ago.
What makes the rebuild so important is that Syracuse is not starting from scratch. Rashard Perry and Isaiah Hastings remain part of the plan, giving the staff some returning pieces to build around while the newcomers settle in. The challenge now is turning that mix of experience and fresh arrivals into a group that can hold up over a full season, because for Fran Browns next step, the answer on the defensive line may say as much as anything else about where the program is headed. Syracuse still has a lingering honor on its football calendar, and it concerns one of the programs most celebrated alumni. Art Monks jersey retirement has been waiting in the wings, and with the Orange heading toward the 2026 season, the university has yet to say exactly when it plans to stage the ceremony for the former wide receiver.
The timing now appears to rest with new athletic director Byran Blair, who will help determine where the tribute fits into the schedule. A fall home date could make the most sense for a celebration of Monks place in Syracuse history, but for now the program is still sorting out when fans finally get the moment they have been anticipating.
