It’s still early in the build toward the 2026 Syracuse Orange football season, but one of the most intriguing names on the roster is already easy to spot. Calvin Russell III arrives as a freshman wide receiver with the kind of size and recruiting profile that turns heads before he ever takes a snap.
Russell is listed at 6’5” and 195 pounds, and he comes to Syracuse from Opa Locka, FL, after playing at Miami Northwestern and Rise Prep Academy. His senior year at Miami Northwestern gave a clear glimpse of the production that helped make him such a coveted recruit: 47 catches, 742 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025.
The big question now is when Syracuse will actually get to see him on the field. Achilles injuries are tough to judge, and Russell had surgery at the end of March or beginning of April.
The report is that, with the new NCAA 5-in-5 eligibility rule now in effect, he will try to play this season. Whether that’s realistic after the injury remains to be seen, but the Orange are clearly hoping to eventually unleash one of the program’s highest ever rated recruits in an Orange Block S jersey.
Syracuse did not land him without a fight. Russell chose the Orange over a strong list of finalists that included Miami, Oregon, Florida, LSU, North Carolina, Florida State and Michigan. Michigan was especially aggressive in its pursuit up until early signing day, with reports saying the Wolverines were also offering him the chance to play basketball along with football, just as he is doing at Syracuse.

Gerry McNamaras first offseason at Syracuse has already been about reshaping the roster around a fresh idea after the Orange stumbled to a 15-17 finish under Adrian Autry. Nearly 20 newcomers have arrived in recent offseasons, giving the Orange a very different look around the quarterbacks and forcing the staff to keep blending transfers with the players already in the program. Even with those departures, there is still plenty of reason to think the group can be competitive. Ahmad Miller arrives from Jackson State, Ju'juan Johnson comes in from LSU, and the Orange have enough new pieces to make the room interesting again.
