The Syracuse Orange are back on the practice field, gearing up for what they hope will be a comeback season in 2026. After a tough 3-9 finish last year, Syracuse is determined to climb the ranks in the competitive ACC. With spring practice underway, fans and coaches are eager to see how the team is shaping up.
Key Focus: Bouncing Back
The 2025 season started with promise at 3-1, but quarterback Steve Angeli's Achilles injury derailed the campaign, leading to eight consecutive losses. Angeli, who threw for 1,317 yards with 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions before his injury, is now working his way back onto the field. His recovery is crucial for the Orange's success this year.
Angeli's prowess hasn't gone unnoticed, with ESPN ranking him among the top Power 4 quarterbacks in the preseason. However, Syracuse isn't leaving anything to chance.
They've bolstered their quarterback lineup with transfers Amari Odom from Kennesaw State, Danny Lauter from Georgetown, and former top recruit Malachi Nelson. This added depth aims to prevent a repeat of last season's struggles if Angeli faces setbacks.
Revamping the Receiving Corps
Last season's inconsistency in the passing game raises questions. Was it due to the quarterback issues, or did the departures of key players like Oronde Gadsden II and LeQuint Allen play a bigger role?
Gadsden's versatility earned him a spot with the Los Angeles Chargers, while Allen's dual-threat capability landed him with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Adding to the challenge, top receiver Jackson Meeks left for the Detroit Lions, and Trebor Pena transferred.
This year, the Orange are rebuilding with newcomers like Elijah Moore from Florida State and Cole Weaver from Miami of Ohio. Freshman standout Calvin Russell also joins the ranks, bringing high expectations as one of the top recruits in the nation.
Understanding Spring Practice
Spring practice is a critical time for development, governed by NCAA rules. Over a 34-day period, teams can hold 15 practice sessions, with 12 involving contact. Full contact begins on the third practice, and only a limited number of sessions can include tackling and scrimmages.
