Syracuse Fans Have Two Big Reasons To Watch This Exhibition

Syracuse and Siena take to the court in a high-stakes exhibition game, as fans eagerly anticipate freshman debuts, championship celebrations, and unexpected reunions.

ALBANY, N.Y. - Syracuse’s second exhibition game comes with a built-in reunion Sunday afternoon at MVP Arena, where the Orange are set to face Siena at 2 p.m.

Gerry McNamara will go against his former school, and a few more familiar faces are in the mix too. Transfers Gavin Doty, Francis Folefac and Tasman Goodrick all have Siena ties, and McNamara brought over much of his coaching staff from there as well.

For Syracuse, the pregame lineup featured Garway Dual, Gavin Doty, Amarri Monroe, Sadiq White Jr. and Luke Wilson.

Siena’s starters were Trent Egbiremolen, Reid Ducharme, Tim Ibukunowala, Tan Yildizoglu and Chris Torres.

The biggest Syracuse note before tipoff: freshman Mark Morano is making his debut in an Orange uniform, while Aiden Tobiason is sidelined with an injury.

Siena also set the tone with a pregame celebration, unveiling its championship banner and handing out MAAC championship rings to last season’s team.

There was a little extra scene-setting, too, with McNamara greeting players in orange, green and normal clothes who are now done with their basketball careers.

Siena still has five players from McNamara’s time there who were part of last year’s MAAC tournament title team. That group includes Brendan Coyle, whom McNamara first inherited as a walk-on and who finished fifth on the Saints in scoring last season at 8.7 points per game. He is Siena’s top returning scorer.

Siena is being coached by Nevada Smith, who spent the previous six years on Shaka Smart’s staffs at Texas and Marquette.

Syracuses New-Look Roster Faces An Early Test Fans Will Track

The preseason AP top-25 is out, and Syracuse was left on the outside looking in as the Orange begin a season that already has the feel of a measuring stick year. With a revamped roster and some changes on the sideline, there is still plenty for this group to prove, and the schedule is not offering much time to settle in before the scrutiny ramps up.

Duke, Virginia, Louisville and Miami all sit among the teams Syracuse is slated to face, with several of those opponents either ranked or drawing votes in the preseason poll. For a program trying to move past recent struggles and establish a new identity, those early ACC games will do more than test the Orange - they should give a clearer picture of how quickly the new-look roster can come together. Calvin Russell Gives Syracuse Fans A New Reason For Optimism

Calvin Russells return from an Achilles injury gave Syracuse something it has been searching for on offense: a young receiver who looked ready to handle a bigger role right away. The freshman wideout made his mark against Louisville with six catches for 53 yards and his first touchdown, giving the Orange a needed spark while showing the kind of reliability that can change how defenses account for the passing game.

The touchdown came with a little extra drama, too, as Russell picked up a 15-yard penalty for his celebration, a reminder that the enthusiasm he brought to the moment was matched by the concern it created on the sideline. Fran Brown made clear he noticed the penalty, even as he understood why the play meant so much, and Syracuse now has a new reason to be intrigued by what Russell can become once he settles fully into the offense. Syracuse Faces Another Tough Home Test As Frustration Keeps Building

Syracuses latest step through ACC play was another hard one to absorb, with the Orange falling to Louisville and extending their conference losing streak to 11 straight games. The setback left them at 2-4 overall and still searching for their first league win, a familiar and frustrating spot for a team trying to keep its season from slipping further off course.

The schedule does not offer much breathing room. Syracuse heads to North Carolina next, then returns home for SMU on Oct. 31 at noon, a matchup that already looks like another stern test. SMU is 5-1 and expected to handle California this week, which only adds to the sense that the Orange will need to find answers quickly before another difficult opponent comes to town. [Read more 🡒]
