Syracuse Faces Another Tough Home Test As Frustration Keeps Building

Syracuse aims to break their ACC losing streak and keep bowl hopes alive as they prepare for a Halloween showdown against SMU with a refreshing midday kickoff.

Syracuse’s Halloween date with SMU now has a kickoff time, and it will look a little different from the string of night games the Orange have been playing through.

The Orange will host the Mustangs on Oct. 31 at 12:00 p.m. ET, ending a run of four straight ACC night kicks.

Syracuse has already been in that 7:30 p.m. ET window against Pittsburgh, Virginia, Louisville and will do it again this week at North Carolina before coming back home for SMU.

The matchup also gives Syracuse another Halloween game, the second in the last two seasons. Last year, the Orange hosted North Carolina on a Friday night and started Joe Filardi at quarterback after Steve Angeli’s injury set off another quarterback shuffle.

Filardi’s first college action was a rough one, as he finished 4-for-18 for 39 yards in Syracuse’s 27-10 loss. Filardi is on the 2026 football team and has not played this season.

He also plays for the Orange lacrosse team.

Syracuse is coming off another frustrating finish, this time a 34-26 home loss to Louisville on Saturday night. The Orange led again and let it slip away for the second straight game, dropping to 2-4 overall and 0-4 in ACC play. That also extended Syracuse’s ACC losing streak to 11 games.

SMU brings a strong record into the stretch run. The Mustangs are 5-1, with their only loss coming in September against Louisville, 41-31.

They host California this week and are favored by more than two touchdowns in a 12:00 p.m. ET kickoff in Dallas.

SMU is one of five ACC teams with one conference loss, and another defeat in league play could put a return trip to the ACC title game in serious jeopardy for the second time in three seasons.

Syracuse’s upcoming schedule now reads like this: Oct. 24 at North Carolina at 7:30 p.m. ET, Oct. 31 vs.

SMU at 12:00 p.m. ET, Nov. 7 vs.

Clemson, Nov. 14 at NC State, Nov. 21 at Boston College and Nov. 28 vs. Notre Dame.

At 2-4, Syracuse needs to win four of its final six games to reach bowl eligibility, with any postseason selection expected in the middle of December.

Kiyan Anthony's Early Syracuse Role Just Became A Real Question

Kiyan Anthonys first preseason look for Syracuse didnt last long, but it did serve as an early reminder that the Orange are still in evaluation mode. Anthony logged just eight minutes in the teams opening exhibition, even as he and Sadiq White Jr. are viewed as core returning pieces with the kind of experience Syracuse wants to lean on this season.

For now, the staff appears intent on using the preseason to sort through the new faces and figure out how the rotation should take shape. Anthony will get another chance to push his case in the next preseason game against Niagara, and his role there may say plenty about how quickly Syracuse wants to ramp him back into the mix. Syracuse Fans Have Two Big Reasons To Watch This Exhibition

Syracuses exhibition against Siena at MVP Arena offers an early look at how Gerry McNamaras team is taking shape, and it comes with a few added layers for Orange fans. Freshman Mark Morano is set to make his Syracuse debut, giving the program its first public glimpse of a newcomer who could factor into the rotation as the season gets underway.

The matchup also brings McNamara against his former school, with Siena now coached by Nevada Smith. Syracuse, meanwhile, will be without Aiden Tobiason because of injury, which slightly alters the mix for a game that is more about evaluation than the final score, but still carries enough storylines to make it worth following closely. Syracuse Heads Into UNC Week With A Quarterback Problem Again

Syracuse is heading into its North Carolina prep with the quarterback picture once again up in the air, a frustrating familiar spot for a team trying to steady itself late in the season. Fran Brown gave the latest health update on Malachi Nelson, Steve Angeli and Amari Odom, and the uncertainty at the most important position leaves the Orange trying to piece together a plan while the weeks work begins.

Brown also said wide receiver Elijah Moore is being moved to safety, another sign that Syracuse is searching for answers wherever it can find them. There was at least one encouraging note on the injury front, with linebacker Antoine Deslauriers expected to practice after missing the previous game, but the bigger question still hangs over the offense as the Orange get ready for a trip into ACC play without a confirmed starter under center.
