Syracuse Faces An Uncomfortable UConn Edge Fans Cant Ignore

Can the Syracuse Orange overcome the advantage their former assistant, now UConn's offensive coordinator, brings to the field?

Syracuse’s trip to UConn on Saturday comes with more than a standard nonconference feel. After a 15-day bye, the Orange will be back on the field against a Huskies team that has already made one thing clear this season: this game carries some familiar faces on both sidelines.

The biggest one is Nunzio Campanile. The former Syracuse offensive assistant is now UConn’s offensive coordinator, and that connection could matter when the teams kick off at noon ET in East Hartford, Conn.

Campanile’s coaching path has taken him from Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, N.J., to Bergen Catholic High School, then to Rutgers from 2018-22. He joined Syracuse in 2023, was elevated to interim head coach after Dino Babers was fired later that season, and then remained on staff when Fran Brown was hired weeks later.

That is unusual in college football, but Campanile stayed through Brown’s first two seasons. The 49 year-old Campanile also helped develop current NFL quarterback Kyle McCord, who led Syracuse to a double-digit win season and bowl victory in 2024.

Now he’s in his first year on Jason Candle’s staff at UConn, and his presence adds a layer to a game that already features some overlap between the programs.

That matters because Campanile has worked with projected Syracuse starter Steve Angeli. If there’s a chess match here, UConn has a coach who may know Angeli’s strengths, his weaknesses, the looks he prefers, and the coverages that can give him trouble. That’s no small thing considering Angeli has had a rough start to the season and was benched for backup Amari Odom in Syracuse’s most recent game.

The Orange and Huskies don’t see each other all that often, but they’ve crossed paths enough to build a real series history. They’ve played 14 times in the 2000s, with Syracuse holding an 8-6 edge. The Orange also beat UConn 27-20 last season at the JMA Wireless Dome.

There’s another staff connection worth watching, too. Syracuse defensive coordinator Vince Kehres previously held the same job at Toledo, where Jason Candle was the head coach. So both sides enter Saturday with coaches who know the other sideline’s tendencies and habits.

UConn is coming off a 24-21 loss to Miami (Ohio) last Saturday, while Syracuse sits at 1-2 heading into its return from the bye.

Syracuse May Be Losing Ground With One Of Its Top 2027 Targets

Syracuse basketballs 2027 class got a major lift with the verbal commitment of five-star prospect Moussa Kamissoko, but the addition could make the Oranges pursuit of another top target a little trickier. Four-star wing-forward Ahmed Nur has already made an official visit to Syracuse and has also been to Florida State and Ole Miss, giving him a clear sense of the schools in the mix as his recruitment starts to tighten up.

Nur is set to play his senior season at CIA Bella Vista and also compete in the Overtime Elite league, two stages that should keep him in the spotlight as his process moves forward. For Syracuse, the timing is not ideal, with the roster currently full and no obvious timeline for a decision, while Florida State and Ole Miss are viewed as especially well positioned as the Orange try to stay in the chase. Syracuse Comes Out Of Bye Facing Pressure To Fix Its Biggest Issues

Syracuse comes out of its bye week carrying the kind of early-season pressure that can shape a fall. The Orange head to Pratt & Whitney Stadium to face UConn with a 1-2 record, and the break gave the staff time to reset around the issues that have already defined the start: too many penalties, too many turnovers, and too little offensive rhythm to let the defense breathe.

The defensive side has given Syracuse a foundation to work with, but the offense has to do more than flash in stretches. Against UConn, the Orange need a more balanced approach and cleaner execution to start turning possessions into momentum, because another uneven performance would only deepen the questions that have followed them into this game. Syracuse Needs More Than A Win Against UConn This Weekend

Syracuse heads to East Hartford this weekend for a noon kickoff against UConn on CBS Sports Network, and the matchup has already drawn plenty of analyst attention. The discussion has centered on where each team might have an edge, which weaknesses could be exposed and which players could swing the game, all of it building toward a game that feels more meaningful than a typical nonconference date.

For Syracuse, the interest goes beyond simply getting back in the win column. The Orange need a performance that looks stable, convincing and useful as the season keeps moving, and that is why the predictions around this one matter so much. A victory would help, but what Syracuse shows in the process may end up telling the bigger story. [Read more 🡒]
