Syracuse Faces A Growing Debate After That UConn Escape

As Syracuse Football prepares to face the Virginia Cavaliers, fluctuating rankings and recent accolades add intrigue to their Week 6 matchup.

Syracuse’s narrow escape against UConn showed up exactly where you’d expect it to: in the weekly college football rankings.

After nearly letting a 20-point lead slip away, the Orange are still getting some respect from the national metrics, but not enough to erase the unease that comes with a one-point win. As Syracuse heads south to Charlottesville for an ACC matchup with Virginia, the broader college football picture offers a mixed read on where the Orange stand entering Week 6.

ESPN’s SP+ was the kindest to Syracuse. The Orange climbed six spots to No. 68 overall, with the breakdown putting them at No. 87 on offense, No. 60 on defense and No. 68 on special teams.

Virginia, meanwhile, took a major hit in the same ranking, tumbling 27 places to No. 48.

The College Football Power Index was less generous to Syracuse. The Orange slid three spots to No. 66, and FPI currently places them in a win range of 4.6 to 7.4 victories. It also gives Syracuse a 25.5% chance of reaching at least six wins.

Other outlets were less impressed by the Orange’s latest result. CBS Sports moved Syracuse from No. 72 to No. 71 in its FBS rankings, with Virginia listed at No.

  1. The Athletic bumped Syracuse five spots, from No. 81 to No. 76, while Virginia dropped from No. 32 to No.
  2. College Football News was harsher still, dropping Syracuse nine spots from No. 76 to No.
  3. Virginia slid there as well, from No. 49 to No.

Neither Syracuse nor Virginia received any votes in the AP poll or the coaches’ poll.

There was at least some good news for the Orange on the conference awards front. Tylik Hill was named ACC Running Back of the Week, and Umari Hatcher earned ACC Wide Receiver of the Week honors.

Around the ACC, Week 5 delivered a few eye-catching results. Pittsburgh edged Virginia Tech 35-33, Miami rolled past Clemson 41-13, Notre Dame beat North Carolina 37-26, and NC State topped Louisville 31-28. Boston College fell to SMU 25-16, Stanford routed Wake Forest 57-3, California lost to UNLV 39-31, and Virginia was beaten by Florida State 38-7.

Week 6 brings another full slate, with Florida State and Louisville opening on Friday. Saturday’s schedule includes North Carolina at Pittsburgh, Wake Forest at NC State, Stanford at Notre Dame, Duke at Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech at California, and Syracuse at Virginia.

Syracuse Fans Have A Real Reason To Watch The ACC Split

The ACCs annual Tipoff in Charlotte had the usual preseason buzz for both the mens and womens basketball sides, but the leagues biggest conversation was happening off the court. Commissioner Jim Phillips spent part of the day fielding questions about the Protect College Sports Act of 2026, a proposal that could reshape how conferences operate and how schools think about their future.

For Syracuse fans, the real intrigue is in the unease around conference realignment. Phillips said four of the leagues 18 school presidents have concerns about portions of the bill tied to that issue, even as the ACC continues to point to rising TV ratings and a healthier financial picture, with revenue distributions expected to approach $1 billion for the first time. For a league long under pressure to prove its stability, those competing forces make the next stretch worth watching closely. [Read more 🡒]

Syracuse Gets A Huge Amarri Monroe Boost As Eligibility Fight Continues

Amarri Monroe is suddenly available for Syracuse mens basketball as the legal fight over his eligibility moves forward, giving the Orange a timely boost before their season opener. Onondaga County Supreme Court judge Jean Marie Westlake granted Monroe a preliminary injunction, clearing the way for him to suit up while he pursues his case against the NCAA.

Monroes lawsuit seeks a fifth year of eligibility after the NCAA left him out of a new rule that grants five years to other players. The ruling came after a hearing and legal arguments centered on his status, and while the immediate result helps Syracuse right away, the bigger question of how Monroes case ultimately resolves is still hanging in the air. Syracuse Just Got A Timely Boost From Two Breakout Playmakers

Syracuse needed something to stabilize an uneven start, and it got exactly that in overtime against UConn. The Orange escaped with a 42-41 win to climb back to .500, with Amari Odom making his first start of the season and immediately giving the offense a different look by throwing for more than 300 yards and accounting for six total touchdowns.

Umari Hatcher and Tylik Hill were right there with him in the push to the finish, and both were rewarded afterward as ACC Offensive Players of the Week. For a Syracuse team trying to build momentum and find more consistency, the emergence of those playmakers gives the offense a much-needed jolt, even if the bigger question is whether it can carry over from one high-scoring escape into the weeks ahead.
