Syracuse football is heading into 2026 with a fresh set of expectations, and the number floating around outside the program is 4.5 wins. On ‘Cuse Sports Talk this week, the hosts settled on five wins as the baseline for the Orange, while also looking ahead to 2027 and a College Football Playoff push with Steve Angeli in his senior season at quarterback.
That feels a little light.
The case for a higher bar starts with what Syracuse already showed last season when Angeli was healthy. The Orange went 3-1 in those games, which is enough to suggest that with him back and recovered from his torn Achilles, the offense ought to be able to function at a higher level. There’s also more depth in the quarterback room now, so if Angeli gets hurt again, Syracuse should have actual options behind him.
The schedule also doesn’t scream impossible. The ACC has been more open than usual, even with Miami reaching the national title game a year ago. Clemson and Florida State have both been down for the last few seasons, and that leaves plenty of conference games that Syracuse can reasonably circle as winnable.
Some results should be expected right away. New Hampshire and UConn look like two wins.
Boston College should be another. North Carolina, which was way down under Bill Belichick in 2025, could also be in the win column.
Add those up, and the Orange are already sitting on three, with several more chances left to grab one or two more.
So while five wins makes sense from a betting angle, the standard should be a little higher. Syracuse should be aiming for at least six wins and a return to bowl eligibility.
Of course, the biggest questions are the same ones that usually decide a season. Can the offensive line keep the quarterback upright?
Can the defensive line consistently pressure the other team’s passer? And who steps up as the main playmakers on offense, especially with top recruit Calvin Russell expected to miss most or all of the season with injury?
