Syracuse heads into Saturday night with little margin left and a quarterback plan that has already changed more than once this season. The Orange will face North Carolina at 7:30 p.m. ET in Chapel Hill, and they arrive trying to snap a rough stretch that has swallowed most of the last two seasons.
The numbers tell the story plainly. Syracuse has lost 12 of its last 14 games dating back to last season, and only one of those two wins came against an FBS opponent, UConn.
The Orange have also dropped 11 straight games against ACC teams. Fran Brown and his group get another chance to reset that run on the road.
At quarterback, Syracuse is again dealing with injuries. The Orange will turn back to the season’s original starter, Steve Angeli, for this matchup. Amari Odom is out for the season after shoulder surgery, and Malachi Nelson is out for the game after ankle surgery.
It has been a revolving door under center for Syracuse in 2025. The Orange have started four quarterbacks: Angeli, Rickie Collins, Luke Carney and Joe Filardi.
Filardi also appeared in last year’s game against North Carolina, making his college debut in a Halloween loss. He remains on the roster and also plays lacrosse for Syracuse, though he has not taken a snap on the football field yet.
Angeli is looking to recapture the form he showed early in the year. Syracuse went 3-1 with him starting before he was hurt and missed the final eight games of the season. This season, he was 1-2 as a starter before stepping aside to receive a PRP injection in his Achilles.
North Carolina comes in at 4-2, a step forward from last season’s 4-8 finish in Bill Belichick’s first year. The Tar Heels opened with a win over TCU in Ireland, then added victories over East Tennessee State and Pittsburgh.
Their losses came against Clemson and Notre Dame. Most recently, North Carolina beat Duke 24-20.
The schedule doesn’t ease up after Syracuse. North Carolina will next face Miami, and if the Tar Heels beat the Orange, ESPN’s College GameDay could be headed to Chapel Hill on Oct. 31.
This will be the ninth meeting between Syracuse and North Carolina. The Tar Heels lead the series 5-3, and the Orange are 2-2 in games played in Chapel Hill. Syracuse’s last win at North Carolina came in 2003.
There is still a path to a bowl game, but it is narrowing. Syracuse needs at least four wins in its final six games to reach six and become bowl-eligible.
The Orange are expected to be underdogs in at least three of those six. Many sportsbooks have Syracuse as an 8.5-point underdog for Saturday night.
Brown did get Syracuse to the 2024 Holiday Bowl, but the program has not had a head coach win two bowl games in his first three seasons since 1992.
ACC Network will carry the game at 7:30 p.m. ET. Radio coverage will be available on several New York State affiliates, including TK99/105 (99.5/100.5 FM) and WAER (88.3) in Central New York, along with Cuse.com.

Syracuse's Top 2027 Commit Is Suddenly Raising The Wrong Questions
Elijah Kimble has been one of the more important long-term recruiting wins in Syracuses 2027 class, a highly regarded running back with the kind of talent that can change the outlook of a future roster. But a recent game has shifted the conversation away from upside and toward something far less comfortable, as his team came out on the wrong end of the result and the attention around him centered on a series of on-field problems.
Reports from the game described multiple behavioral issues, including a helmet toss, personal fouls and an altercation after the final whistle. For Syracuse, the bigger concern is not what happened in one loss so much as what it suggests about Kimbles maturity and discipline before he ever arrives on campus in 2027, because the next chapter of his development now comes with a different set of questions attached. Syracuse Fans Keep Reading Into One Fran Brown Sideline Moment
A sideline photo from after Syracuses home loss sent Orange fans into detective mode this week, with athletic director Bryan Blair and coach Fran Brown caught in a conversation that quickly became its own storyline. It was the kind of moment that can take on a life of its own when a program is searching for answers, and Syracuse is doing plenty of that right now amid a skid that has raised plenty of questions around the team.
Brown has since pushed back on any notion of tension, saying his relationship with Blair is good and that the two stay in regular contact and support each other. Still, the buzz around the image says plenty about the mood around the program heading into the matchup with North Carolina, where every detail seems to draw extra attention until Syracuse can turn the conversation back to football. Syracuse Just Took Another Brutal Hit At Quarterback
Syracuses quarterback room took another major hit this week, and it came at a time when the Orange could least afford it. Fran Brown announced that Amari Odom is done for the rest of the 2026 season after shoulder surgery, adding another layer of uncertainty to a position group that has already been stretched thin.
Malachi Nelson is also expected to miss several weeks after tightrope surgery for a high-ankle sprain, leaving Syracuse to lean on Steve Angeli and Danny Lauter for the time being. For a team trying to stabilize its offense, the biggest question now is how Brown and his staff will manage the position while waiting for bodies to return. [Read more 🡒]
