Syracuse Eyes Top Recruits After Hubert Davis Exit

With Hubert Davis departing UNC, Syracuse eyes potential recruits linked to Carolina, aiming to boost their future roster under new head coach Gerry McNamara.

Hubert Davis' departure from North Carolina marks a significant shift in the college basketball landscape. After five seasons at the helm, including a memorable run to the 2022 national championship game, the Tar Heels are now in search of a new leader. This vacancy is arguably the most coveted position in this offseason’s coaching carousel.

With the change in leadership, there's a possibility that current UNC players might explore their options in the transfer portal, which opens from April 7 to April 21. Additionally, if a new head coach is appointed, a special 15-day transfer window will be available five days after the announcement. This situation could also influence UNC's 2026 recruits, as they might reconsider their commitments with Davis no longer in charge.

Meanwhile, Syracuse has made a strategic move by appointing Gerry McNamara, the former Siena head coach, to lead their basketball program. As McNamara assembles his coaching staff, the composition of Syracuse’s 2025-26 roster remains uncertain. There's potential for him to bring some of his Siena players along, and the Orange might also have their eyes on talent with ties to North Carolina.

One player of interest could be Derek Dixon, a promising freshman guard from the DMV area. Dixon made a notable impact in his first season at UNC, averaging 22.3 minutes, 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

His shooting percentages were impressive, with 36.5% from the field, 39.7% from three-point range, and 81.8% from the free-throw line. As a top-50 national prospect from Gonzaga College High School, Dixon was heavily recruited by Syracuse's former coaching staff and had the Orange in his top six before committing to the Tar Heels.

Another intriguing prospect is Dylan Mingo, a five-star guard in the 2026 class, ranked No. 2 nationally by Rivals. Mingo, who committed to North Carolina in February, hails from Long Island Lutheran High School, the same program that produced Syracuse freshman Kiyan Anthony. Although Syracuse offered him a scholarship in June 2025, they weren't a major contender for his commitment at the time.

As McNamara begins to shape his team for the 2026-27 season, the potential addition of players like Dixon and Mingo could be pivotal. The next few weeks will be crucial as the landscape continues to evolve, with Syracuse possibly looking to capitalize on the changes at North Carolina.
