Syracuse Defense Suddenly Has A Big Concern Before Virginia

Syracuse faces potential defensive setbacks against Virginia as key players, including standout linebacker Antoine Deslauriers, are listed as questionable in the initial ACC injury report.

Syracuse got a notable surprise on the first ACC injury report of the week: linebacker Antoine Deslauriers was listed as questionable Wednesday night ahead of Saturday’s trip to Virginia.

That status stands out because Deslauriers was on the field for Syracuse’s final defensive snap against UConn and didn’t appear to be dealing with any obvious limitation. He did wear a sleeve on one of his legs during the game, but he still turned in one of the better individual performances in a rough outing for the Orange defense.

Deslauriers finished with seven tackles, forced a fumble in pass coverage and recovered it. Pro Football Focus gave him the top game grade among Syracuse defenders, with the turnover playing a major role in that evaluation.

If he can’t go, Syracuse would be losing a key piece against a Virginia offense that leans on the run. Deslauriers, a sophomore, has been the Orange’s most physical presence in that area and leads the team with 10 run stops, according to PFF. That total is twice as many as any other Syracuse player.

Syracuse’s injury list did have a few encouraging notes. Running back Ahmad Miller was also listed as questionable and was the only back on the report, even though Syracuse appeared to finish the UConn game with only one of its top four running backs available.

Cornerback Nazir Ward was questionable as well. Kicker Tripp Woody was listed as doubtful, while wide receiver Darien Williams was out. Woody has already been replaced by Shay Barker as Syracuse’s field-goal kicker, though he had continued handling kickoffs.

Freshman safety Tedarius Hughes was not on the injury report for the first time this season.

Virginia had one notable name on its own report, too. Starting cornerback Omillio Agard was listed as questionable. He has played more snaps than any other Cavaliers cornerback and, according to PFF, has graded out as Virginia’s top corner.

Syracuse Heads To Virginia With More Than One Problem To Solve

Syracuse heads into its Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Virginia still carrying the boost of a recent overtime win against UConn, but the bigger picture has not changed much for a team trying to stop a nine-game conference losing streak. The Orange have been looking for a steadier answer in league play, and this trip offers another chance to show the UConn result was more than a brief lift.

Virginia enters with its own issues after recent losses and some defensive struggles, which gives Syracuse an opening if it can handle the details that have undone it in conference play. Both sides have enough uncertainty around them to make this a revealing game, especially for an Orange team that needs more than a single win to change the tone of its season. [Read more 🡒]

Syracuse Must Build Around Amarri Monroe With His Status Still Unsettled

Amarri Monroes Syracuse future is on hold in the broader legal sense, but the Orange are preparing as if he is part of the rotation right now. The guard remains eligible to play because of a court injunction while he challenges the NCAAs 5-in-5 rule in a lawsuit, and Gerry McNamara has made clear the plan is to use him like any other key piece as the season unfolds.

The problem, of course, is that Monroes standing could shift again with the NCAA expected to appeal and no trial date on the calendar. That leaves Syracuse in a familiar sort of limbo, building around a player it wants on the floor while knowing his availability may still change at some point during the year. [Read more 🡒]

Syracuse Is Pushing Early For A Rising Jersey Prospect's Visit

Syracuse has gotten involved early with one of the more intriguing young recruits in the region, reaching out to 2029 Garden State athlete Kiion Jones as his profile keeps rising. Jones, who has already picked up multiple college football offers, recently added Syracuse to the list, and the Orange have made sure the family connection is part of the pitch. Coaches Brandon Napoleon and Charles Watkins have been in touch with Jones and his family, stressing both athletic development and the support system around the program.

Jones is expected to come to the JMA Wireless Dome to take in a game, a visit that should give Syracuse another chance to make a strong impression before his recruitment gets even busier. Listed as a wide receiver and coming off a notable season, he fits the type of early evaluation target the Orange have started to prioritize, especially when there is still time to build a relationship before the rest of the country fully catches up.
