Syracuse Coaching Search Just Got More Complicated

Syracuse faces increasing competition in its search for a new head coach as key candidates are rapidly becoming unavailable.

Syracuse Basketball Coaching Search: The Latest Updates

The search for Syracuse's next men's basketball coach is heating up after the recent dismissal of Adrian Autry. Following a 15-17 season and a first-round exit in the ACC Tournament against SMU, Syracuse is on the hunt for a fresh leader to rejuvenate the program. Missing the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year, the Orange are eager to make a bold move.

Initially, six candidates emerged as potential successors, but the list is already narrowing. St. Louis recently secured Josh Schertz with a new deal, taking him off the table for Syracuse.

Providence's Coaching Carousel

Providence is also in the mix, having parted ways with Kim English after the Friars fell to St. John's in the Big East quarterfinals. English's tenure ended with a 48-52 record over three seasons, leaving Providence in search of a new direction.

Bryan Hodgson: A Leading Contender

Bryan Hodgson is emerging as a strong candidate for both Syracuse and Providence. Currently the head coach at South Florida, Hodgson has led the Bulls to a commendable 23-8 season. Known for his New York roots, Hodgson's journey began in Olean, N.Y., and he boasts a solid coaching resume, including successful stints at Arkansas State and as an assistant under Nate Oats at Alabama and Buffalo.

His familiarity with the region and impressive track record make him a logical fit for Syracuse. However, with Providence also interested, the competition is fierce.

Why Providence Might Appeal to Hodgson

Providence has a storied history, highlighted by seven NCAA tournament appearances under former coach Ed Cooley. The Friars have claimed two Big East championships and reached the Final Four twice, with the last appearance in 1987. Cooley's departure to Georgetown in 2023 opened up a prime opportunity for a coach like Hodgson.

Syracuse's Next Steps

With Bryan Blair now appointed as Syracuse's new athletic director, the school is poised to make a decisive coaching hire. Blair emphasized the importance of this decision, noting that the choice of coach can significantly impact the student-athlete experience and the broader image of the program.
