Syracuse Bowl Hopes Are Back With One Big December Question

Syracuse football's surprising resurgence has sparked nationwide speculation on its bowl game prospects, as experts weigh in on the team's potential postseason destinations.

Syracuse’s upset of Southern Methodist last weekend has shifted the conversation around the Orange in a hurry. With four games left, Syracuse needs two more wins to reach bowl eligibility, and national projections are starting to treat that as a real possibility.

The path ahead is manageable on paper, even if nothing is guaranteed. Syracuse still has Clemson, a North Carolina State team that fired its head coach and a Boston College squad that was held to two points in its 45-point loss to Duke. Add in the Orange’s recent wins over SMU and North Carolina, and the national bowl picture is beginning to tilt in Syracuse’s direction.

Several outlets now have the Orange headed somewhere warm in December.

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura projects Syracuse to meet Marshall in the newly created San Juan Bowl, the FBS’s newest postseason game. That matchup would send an ACC team against a Sun Belt opponent in Puerto Rico’s capital city. Marshall is one game away from bowl eligibility.

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach sees a different destination, slotting Syracuse against Minnesota in the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa, Florida. That projection comes with a little extra juice after both teams turned in strong showings last weekend.

Syracuse knocked off then-No. 19 SMU, while Minnesota pushed No.

6 Indiana to overtime in Bloomington.

On3’s Brett McMurphy also has Syracuse in the San Juan Bowl, though he pairs the Orange with Georgia Southern instead of Marshall. The Eagles own the best conference record in the Sun Belt East and are coming off a 19-3 win against Appalachian State, their biggest rival.

CBS Sports takes Syracuse in another direction entirely, projecting the Orange against Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl. If that matchup held, it would put Syracuse in an SEC setting. Syracuse has played one SEC team during Fran Brown’s tenure, losing 45-26 to Tennessee in last year’s Aflac Kickoff in Atlanta.

Not every projection is optimistic, though. Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer has Syracuse missing the cut for a second straight season.

In his outlook, the ACC sends one playoff team, Miami, and nine teams to bowl games. Fischer’s list includes Boston College and Clemson, and he has Boston College in the San Juan Bowl, which other projections have linked to Syracuse.

Athlon Sports is also cautious on the Orange. Steven Lassan places Syracuse in his “just missing” category, along with Boston College.

For now, Syracuse’s bowl hopes are alive, and the next few weeks will decide whether those projections turn into a trip in December.

Clemsons Injury Trouble Could Change Everything For Syracuse Saturday

Syracuses matchup with Clemson took on a different look after Dabo Swinney said several Tigers starters were injured in the loss to Florida State and are expected to miss Saturdays game in the Dome. Among the players sidelined are running back Gideon Davidson, left guard Elyjah Thurmon, center Harris Sewell and linebacker Kobe McCloud, a cluster of absences that hits both the offensive line and the defensive front of one of the ACCs most physical teams.

For Syracuse, the timing matters. Clemson is already turning to backup players to fill those spots, and the Orange now get a chance to test a reshuffled opponent in a game that could carry real weight in the conference race. The injuries do not guarantee anything, but they do change the margin for error and add another layer of intrigue to a matchup that had already been important. [Read more 🡒]

Syracuse Made An Early Impression On A Quarterback Fans Should Watch

Zymere Weavers visit to Syracuse for the game against SMU gave the 2028 quarterback a close look at what the Orange can offer on a big fall Saturday. The trip included a chance to soak in the game-day atmosphere at the JMA Wireless Dome, and Weaver came away impressed by the way Syracuse carried itself on the field, especially the discipline it showed throughout the game.

Weaver also spent time with Syracuse coaches, talking through his own high school season and the style of play he brings to the position. He had plenty to notice from Steve Angelis performance as well, and the visit appears to have given Syracuse an early foothold with a quarterback fans will want to keep an eye on as his recruitment develops. Syracuses New Rotation Gave Orange Fans Plenty To Like Early

Syracuses first look at a new rotation against New Haven offered plenty for Orange fans to take in, and most of it came on the kind of night coaches like to see early in the season. The Orange grabbed control quickly, kept the Chargers at arms length throughout, and got meaningful contributions from Gavin Doty, Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White Jr. while also winning the battle on the glass and turning defense into extra possessions.

For Gerry McNamara, the halftime interview centered on the shooting, which is often the first thing to settle when a team is still sorting out roles and rhythm. Even with Syracuse in command, there was still a sense that this group was showing only part of what it can become, and that makes the early returns on the new rotation worth watching as the schedule starts to tighten.
